You are allowed to make purchases, the problem lies in having enough money to pay the bill. Being on SS, you are allowed your home, and a vehicle. If he has multiple cars, then he may have to reduce his assets to still qualify, assuming it is SS disability, if it's SS because he is retired, there is nothing to worry about, except having enough to pay the bill.

If he is on disability, he can purchase a car. My husband had to go on disability last year and one of the things that they told us we could use it for is purchasing a vehicle. So we did and no problem. My in-laws living entirely on social security and they purchase a new car every 4 or 5 years and they have no problem. I guess I don't understand why your friend is worried, people need a vehicle to get around. If you aren't sure, contact your local social security office and ask.

If his credit card has a limit over $9,000 and he can afford to make the payments he can buy whatever he wants. Social Security is not an issue.

There are limitations on the assets one can have and still recieve benefits on SSI...

Believe me... anyone who would or could believe that you can be on social security and that our government is going to allow you to live like a king or queen

i.e. live in a $750,000 dollar home when a conservative home in the general area only runs $35,000 has got to be off their rocker...

or be allowed to drive a Lamborgini because it got paid for or was donated to the person etc. instead of say a 10 year old Ford Taurus

a person on SSI can only have up to $2000.00 in a bank account (or for a couple its $3000 slightly more)

a person is allowed a conservative reasonable car except with certain exceptions....

a powerchair bound individual might have to have a powerchair accesible van.... which normally would go beyond the limits..

reasonable exceptions to the rules are made

here is a link to a website with this info...

http://www.cbpp.org/3-10-00socsec.htm

being able to buy the car or pay for it isn't the issue it is how valuable is it ?

and could they have used the amount beyond the $2000.00 mark for example to be self sufficient..instead i.e. pay their own rent, food, utilities etc. instead of it being paid for by the tax payers??

your friend has ligitimate casue to worry ... he can be cut off, because once a reasonable amount beyond the limit is paid on the car he will either have to get rid of it... or they will cut him off until he is equally in dept for his bills not getting paid...

get some advice and assistance from a SS attorney on this one to remedy this major faux paus

also realize that you can use the back pay to buy a nicer one than the later limitation can appl;y this aging is one of the exceptions...

they want you after you're on it to use it for basic needs not luxury items,,, going overboard on the car you drive is a luxyury item not basic transportation

Insurance does not become your master when you submit a claim for benefits.

Your Consitutional rights cannot be liened.

Of course you have the right to buy a car.

Idk, he needs to check with the administration to be sure, but I would think his benefits are his to do with as he pleases?

However, when I went through bankruptcy, I know it's different but it's also government guideline dependent, I was allowed only to keep a car so long it was 2,000 or less in value, so again he should check with the administration to be sure.

Maybe you can check, as a friend?

If worse comes to, just title it in mom's name or something, idk.
