I've had a cockatiel, Latrell, for over a year now. He used to love playing with my miniature dachshud and they were inseparable. He was barely ever in his cage unless I was at school. But now I have two new puppies. They're hounds, so naturally they want to eat the poor guy. I only take him out now like once a week, and he's very angered by it. I feel really bad, so I thought maybe I could get a parakeet to keep him company so he doesn't feel so alone. I used to have a cockatiel and a parakeet and they were best friends. They shared the same cage and everything. I'm hoping this is normal, and that it would work for Latrell too. Does anyone know if cockatiels and parakeets can really live together and be happy about it? If so, does gender matter?

cockatiels and parakeets can not be together because they will fight

If you put another parakeet in with your male cockatiel, like a budgie, chances are they will fight because Latrell will be Territorial over his space (cage). It won't matter if the parakeet is male or female. Also, parakeets like to preen other birds and he can end up bald. Your best bet is to slowly introduce another cockatiel to him - have the other bird in a separate cage and leave them next to one another for a couple weeks - then put them both in a DIFFERENT cage so they won't fight over territory. You might find he won't be as friendly towards you, as he will be distracted by another bird, but that's something you have to weigh up. I had the same problem with my cockatiel, and went through this process already. Cockatiels do get stressed very easily, so be very careful about any new pets that come in to your house. Good luck, hope this helped!

First, try spending more time with him. If that does not work, try new toys.

If you do decide to get another bird, you will need to keep it in QUARANTINE for at least 30 days BEFORE allowing the cages in the same part of the house.
Then you can start moving them near each other.
Then they can have out of cage time together.

If they get along together, then you can start letting them in the same cage together.

Do not get a parakeet (budgie). The only good cage mate would be another cockatiel. You would more than likely need a newer, larger cage as well.

I had both kids of birds and I hear you cannot put different kind of birds in the same cage or the bigger one will bite off the others beak of something bad. I would get another parakeet with pretty colors and they will fall in love. Life is short for the parakeet so find the opposite sex. You know if the skin where the nostrils are is light color it is a female and if it is dark color it is a mal. Go for it.
