Turning the other cheek is a third way, is a 'nonviolent direct action,' a 'practical, strategic measure for empowering the oppressed.

' By turning the other cheek, for example, the victim 'robs the oppressor of his power to humiliate.' The oppressor must decide whether or not to slap the person again, but this time not as one would slap a slave with the back of the hand but as one would an equal.

Turning the cheek 'seizes initiative from the oppressor, overcomes fear, and reclaims the power of choice, all the while maintaining the humanity of the oppressor.'"

Funny, I don't seem to have this problem. Just remember one thing: God deals with people on an individual level. This is your struggle and your stuggle alone. Obviously your main task for change right now is to find a wy in which you can love them. As for people who automatically think Christians love their neighbors after they become a Christian, this is not the case. Usually a Christian realizes that they don't love their neighbor as much as they would like to. They get persecuted, beaten, laughed at, scorned, and even rejected. They could even be disowned from family members. I don't know you but here are a few things to consider: A) But perhaps you're causing these debates to occur. I know I had this problem, the problem to debate lovingly and convincingly. B) Maybe you are in the wrong church or faith. I'm not saying to stop being a Christian but maybe you are holding onto heretical ideas. Or maybe God wants you to be educated in your friend's heretical ideas. Either way, this could be a time for discovery and maturity. C) Perhaps you're hanging with the wrong friends. If you're not hanging with Christian friends, I'd advise you do so, especially an older Christian (one who has been in the faith for a while) to help mentor you. Either way, look towards this as a challenge. God is sending you this situation to build you up. You're doing an amazing work and you've done well to ask for guidance.

This is part of the conundrum with religion.

Religion is based on two principles that have some serious implications. One, Christianity (and Islam and Judaism for that matter) is based on writings and beliefs of long dead folks. Belief in this writings requires faith. This appears very "irrational". Second, Christianity is monotheistic. Belief in religion/gods outside of their one true god is wrong. This is very exclusionary. So you can see why tolerance can be very difficult to achieve. Taken to the extreme outsiders from your group are to be condemned and avoided.

Yet, you point out that religion itself has principles which can be the seeds for tolerance and reconcilation. For example, "Turn the other cheek." If you search the Bible there are many principles like that which can be the basis of tolerance. At the end of the day, it really depends on who you are dealing with and what they perceive as good Christian behavior. Not everyone is going to be "enlightened" and act in a manner befitting the "ideal".

Angelpurplewings-- Turning the other cheek is not just for fellow believers.

Christians are SUPPOSED to be examples to the world of the Lord's forgiveness. (However, sometimes we all fall short of that.) Christianity is not a club for insiders only. Everyone is invited and we are to treat everyone with equal respect. ;o]

You are right, Christians should never attack people with the Bible or with their beliefs. I am a Christian and while I may not agree with something or actually believe totally opposite and thin you are wrong, I am not going to throw what I believe at your head. I am sorry that some of the people that call themselves Christians on here are not at all acting like it.

A better question is why do you keep attacking them, if you don't like something as you say then why keep contacting them. Could be deep down you want to be included but are ashamed because you don't know how.

What do you mean by attacked? Literally or speaking wise? They may not be attacking you but trying to convince you about Jesus and Christianity. Jesus loves you and wants you to accept him as your savior. You will never regret your decision!

Why do you always provoke them? You only have two cheeks and they tend to get sore after awhile.

But hey that is just a guess I am a Jew not a Christian

They decide to lay the golden rule aside in order to use the silver rule (an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth) in self defense. Plus, speaking of the golden rule, I would want someone to defend himself/herself against me if I was attacking them. I hope that helps somewhat.
