What do these names mean to you?
Are they the same?
If someone called you one of these names would you think it was a racist remark?
If you do find these to be racist remarks is it ok for one white person to call another white person these names like blacks do with the n word?

I posted a question earlier about this very thing. A person was being racist to blacks and in response to his post he was called a redneck which is a derogatory term used for white people and just as unacceptable as any other derogatory term used for blacks, Asians, Mexicans and gays. It is all unacceptable in my eyes. I do think that if people find a derogatory word bothers them then they should not use it, if a black person finds the N word unacceptable than they should not use it either, In my opinion the N word is flung about so carelessly within the black community that people seem to think it is less offensive than it is and when it is used by other races they become upset. Unfortunately within the black community where I am at there seems to a sense of entitlement where racism is concerned. They can be racist because they are a minority but are quick to point out racism in others. I hate this because I am not a racist in any way but I am surrounded by it daily and sometimes I struggle to not become bitter when I am discriminated against because I am white.

I'm not really opposed to either term, if used properly and without malic.
A redneck is one who get's out there in the sun and does what needs doing. They can be the salt of the earth type of people, but some aren't. Rednecks are generally found in the South and treat people right, go to church on Sunday, have generally clean fun. The term redneck is used a lot where I live.
Hillbilly isn't used so much where I live, except in a derogatory way, such as "You redneck hillbilly! You ain't worth a dime!" Translation:" You have the ability to work, have worked in the past, and worked hard, but now you don't work, and are lazy, possibly filthy and good for nothing. You only want something for nothing and expect everything."

My family and I call each other Rednecks or say that "so and so" has certain redneck qualities all the time. It's sort of a badge of honor. While the term Hillbilly is more of an insult, and an insult to a rednecks intelligence.
I don't think they are racists remarks, although I can't picture it being used by anyone other than a white person.

I live in an area where these words are used frequently. To me, a hillbilly is simply a person from a rural background who might not be as sophisticated as they could be, but are generally harmless. A redneck can be the same, but can also be a willfully ignorant person with a malicious streak (such as the local rednecks who go around beating up gay people). If someone called me either a hillbilly or a redneck, it would just be silly, as the term doesn't generally apply to urban Italian Catholics. Some people embrace these terms proudly, and are proud of being hillbillies or rednecks. I've seen several men with "Redneck" printed on the back of their belts. I think the derogatory terms "cracker" or "honky" would bear a closer resemblance to the "n-word" in usage and intent.

redneck,

farmer, a man whose neck is red from exposure to the sun all day while working in the fields.

hillbilly.

the term originated in the hills of Tennessee. where Billy was a very popular name (still is) so in short hillbilly simply means a person named Billy, who lives in the hills.

hillbilly is also regarded as more of a hunter/ gatherer, where a redneck is a farmer.

of the levels of Hickdom i feel that the Redneck is slightly above the Hillbilly, for one because the redneck has heavy machinery to play with, and because he creates a better living enviroment for himself where the hillbilly is more idle and willing to live of whatever runs through the yard.

i have been mistaken fro a hillbilly, but i am a redneck through and through. as for offense...i have been up to my ears in pig crap, there is little that can really offend me.

I grew up in the back roads of West Virginia and Kentucky. I don't find it offensive when called a hillbilly. By the grace of God I am what I am and proud of it. We can all be rednecks. Redneck is an attitude. Hillbilly is being born a raised in the country.

Thus my avatar, rockyroad.

Um..im not sure why you are asking this here....but! It is racist!

I want to add! I am a redneck! I just get offended when other races scream about every nickname and white's are supposed to be okay with 'cracker, hillbilly and redneck', when they are using it in a derogatory way!
