I donated some food to a local Knights of columbus. I forgot to ask about a receipt. I know my hubby will be asking if I got one to use it for a tax deduction. Did I screw up?

In the US with the 2006 revisions in the tax code you do need a receipt to claim a tax deduction for a donation of goods such as food. The receipt should show what was donated it may or may not give the value of the donation. You may need to establish that yourself. However you need a receipt only if you plan to itemoze your deductions. If you plan to take the standard deduction you do not. if they are close to you just drop in and see if they will give you a receipt.

In Canada you must be a registerd charity to give a reciept. ask if they are registerd?
