If you change your address after filing your return, you should notify your post office that services your old address. This ensures your mail will be forwarded (not all post offices forward government checks). Complete a Form 8822 (PDF), Address Change Request, to change your address with the IRS. Form 8822 may be downloaded from the IRS website (www.irs.gov).

There are a number of ways to tell the IRS that your address has changed. However, none are guaranteed to update your file before your refund check is mailed. My recommendation is to file a forwarding order with the US Post Office. That way the refund check will follow you. The link below is the IRS answer to how to update your address.

Wood Smoke said that not all post offices forward government checks. ALL post offices MUST follow the same set of rules. They are all part of the US Postal Service. Forwarding is not an option.

You can file a change of address on the IRS website. You can also just file a change of address with the Post Office and your refund check will be forwarded to you.
