You may be pulling your hair too tight or using an elastic band that's too small.
Try to create a looser ponytail & use the thick, non-snagging elastics made by Goody.
The other thing you can do is section your hair - one section on top of the other. Create a stacked pony tail by making a pony tail out of the top section with an elastic. Then combine it further down w/ the lower ponytail with 1 elastic. Don't pull to hard. This will help distribute the weight of your hair.
Here are some other ideas:
You can make a sophisticated ponytail by wearing it low, wrapping a section of your hair around the elastic and securing it with a pin. You can also use a ribbon for a touch of whimsy.
Hair bands are in this season. Plain thin ones are very classic. Or you can use a scarf for a retro '60s look. You can embellish plain ones with hot glue and buttons or beads for a casual or evening look.
You can make your hair into a neat bun. For a plain but finished look, pin down strays w/ hair pins that have tortoise shell on one side. (Goody makes them.) For a dressier effect use hair pins w/ pearls or rhinestones.
For a casual look, make a messy bun or chignon.
You can braid your hair & wear the braid down. Or you can loosely braid your hair & create a bun.
BTW, you can braid your hair after shampooing and let it dry. Take out the braids and you'll have a loose wave/crimp that's perfect for a beachy, summer look.
Allure & InStyle are really good magazines for hair style ideas.

Do not worry. Maybe you're just tying your pony tail too tight. Some advice from my mother: take your ponytail out and massage gently with your fingertips. It feels good and and gets rid of the pain. Also, dont wear a ponytail to bed {if your are that is}. It could just be that your hairs are breaking from tying the ponytail too tight and that's why it hurts.

Chances are you have pulled it too tight. I have long hair, and if I pull it too tight it feels the same way and I get headaches. Try putting up without pulling your hair back so tight. You should be able to wiggle the base of the ponytail around a bit. It won't make your ponytail fall out or anything, just lessen the headaches.

Maybe you have your hair up too tight. Loosen it when you wear it up. If that doesn't work, then maybe when you have your hair up, you're wearing something heavy? If not then I don't know!

it's either too tight, or, as you said, too heavy. try it half up maybe and see if that helps the pain any.
