Not nothing to outrageous, but I want a wedding dress, and reception, and the wedding party to be dressed up, and all the good stuff. But what could I do to save money? What store, any sites, or anything you did to save money, how much did you spend in total? Where did you have it?

Let's see (my wedding is this July) - my gown cost me $196.00. Got a bridesmade dress and ordered it in ivory. Has no train but I don't want one. 2 girls in wedding with dresses at $175 each. Having small family wedding with each family member providing dish to pass - thus no cost for reception. Church fee of $100.00 for service. Getting bunch of disposable cameras for everyone to take snapshots - thus no photographer needed at reception/wedding party. Having one for wedding - avg I found was about $300.00 for such short time. Having wedding party at local VFW that has a juke box and CD system (bartender will play our CD's if we bring some). $200.00 for hall & bartender - not providing free beer either. Did find DJ's through referrals for $200-$500 depending on length of time they are playing. Don't know yet if I want one. Making own bouquets and having sheet cakes for wedding (aunt making them).
Family only at wedding and reception - everyone to wedding dance. This saves more money because I don't have to worry about feeding a lot of people or needing a lot of room for them either. I got all this arranged during the first two weeks in March.
If you have outside wedding, saves money (but am having church saved as backup for bad weather).

A friend of mine cut cost in the following ways. She got her dress at a discount bridal shop and had a family member do the alterations. She handmade all of the bouquets and flower arrangements. The cake and catered meal was made by her future father-in-law. Her ceremony and reception were both at a local park. She rented chairs. A family member brought a portable stereo and CD's. Her attendants got their dresses at the same discount store. Her flower girl baskets were purchased at a local craft store. Also her husband-to-be wore a suit that he already owned. She had the pastor from her church perform the ceremony.
She had a wedding that looked like it cost $50,000 but she didn't even spend half that much. If you don't like having family or friends do the work look into getting things wholesale. You could also look into getting things on-line.
You can have the wedding of your dreams and not go outrageous with the spending.

First set a budget and work within that parameter. You & your finace then must decide what you HAVE to have to make it 'yours'.

If you do alot of the leg-work yourself and recruit family & friends to help, you can have a pretty decent wedding.

Here are a few places to start.

To find an officiant type into Yahoo your city, state & wedding officiant (no 's' on the end) You will have a few to choose from, usually on the 2nd page. The larger bridal sites seem to get top billing. If you do go to the bridal sites, please visit the site of someone you think you might like. Those bridal sites make vendors & officiants pay for your contact info so you may not hear back from someone you'd hoped.

If you're anywhere near Cincinnati, give me a shout; here or from my site

Ps. A wedding usually goes over budget by about 15%

Couple of ideas for you...

1) There is a good general list of costs on
http://www.costofwedding.com/
as well as the ability to see average costs based on zip code
2) One way to save some quite a lot of money

Have fun

You can save a lot of money by asking someone to make your dress and the attendant dresses. You can also make the cake yourself and do everything yourself.

The national average for a wedding is around 26k ... if you're in a large metro area, then that price will be higher. Sometimes it isn't much higher, but in DC it is around 40k average. It just depends on where you're located and what kinds of services you have around you.
