That scenario wouldn't be too unusual. You might be taking a course or two related to your major/minor during the Frosh/Soph year but it's good to get general ed out of the way. I also took most of my electives in my junior & senior years - so I could take the occasional "fun" course and take some of the pressure off the advanced courses in my major.

It's actually not a bad thing. A lot of people go into college not knowing what they want to major in or not really knowing about the major they have decided on. Gen. Ed. requirements let you really take a look at what's out there.

For the most part, but it really depends on your major. For a science/engineering major this is especially true. For a more general major, like english, classes taken in the first two years are general, but also tend to apply more directly to your major. for example, everyone takes freshman english. true it is a very general class but for an english major this class is much more interesting and therefore will apply more to future studies than for an engineering major. regardless, however, there are many classes taken in the first two years that are specific to your field of study, even if they could apply over several majors. over time classes narrow until you are in classes with only those folks you will actually see at your departmental graduation.

probably. I would say that the first 2 years you are learning , practicing, taking classes in your major (career) that you signed up for or that you are interested in. then after taking classes , the last 2 years you can take the course you want you are not required to take the courses you had to take such as : English, Government, Math, other. Then when you are done with all that , you can pick whatever class you want to sign up for that is extra or fun that you want to do without having to take the classes required for your education. I belive you can pick anything else you want without worrying about the requirements. Good Luck!

Generally you do take gen.ed. classes then you take the classes that focus on your degree. But usually they are somewhat easy, and some are fun. Depends on what kind of college your doing university vs. community college. If you have to take a placement test then the results help find where you need to be placed.

Usually...yes. By your junior year, I think you have to declare your major.

Yes, for the most part, but you could always mix things up.
