‘Falsehood’, for instance, covers self-delusion equally if not more that attempts to deceive others. We have all experienced the effects of megalomaniac political leaders who believe their own lies and draw their populations into war or economic collapse. Even the highest form of truth can turn into falsehoods when they are applied in rigid, one-sided ways and interpreted so literally that they lose their inner meaning. This is how spiritual insights turn into fundamentalist shibboleths and programmes for social reforms become dogmatic and inhumane …‘despicable comments’ intended to discredit or wound others as falsehoods, even if their basis is true. For the value of this truth is undermined by the harm created by its expression and the hurtful intention behind that utterance. In other words… truth includes a form of cosmic libel law in which denunciations leading to mental or physical violence are regarded as falsehoods whether there is a superficial ‘truth’ can be proved or not.

GLH (male 48 UK): I'm sorry, but I had to keep the full statement or it would lose meaning.

What Mr Rankin said is true. Unfortunately, it would not apply to most people who could understand what he said. And the people who need it probably wouldn't understand it.....

Islamic Monotheist:
Yes I agree with that statement, falsehood is changing something from its true intentions and modifying such that it no longer retains the purity of the truth akin to making it a lie.
In Islam all of ours deeds are judged based on intention. God is so merciful with us look how are deeds are written.
If we intend a good deed, and don't do it, we get 1 good deed written for us.
If we intend a good deed, and do it, we get 10+ good rewards written for us.
If we intend a bad deed, but then don't do it (because we remembered God and not because we got lazy) then we get 1 good deed for us.
Only if we intend a bad deed, and then do it, then we get 1 bad deed written in our record. And even this bad deed can be erased if we truly repent for it and God forgives us.
Thanks, I learned what the word shibboleth means now. Something believed by a certain group of people, that others not of the group regard as unimportant or untrue.
Peace Be With You

Anything taken to an extreme is dangerous. People have been twisting good ideas to hurt others for milennia. Humans can be very corrupt, and very clever. Using religion to hurt is just another way people have gained power.

Quite right. Truth used as a weapon may indeed be truth.
But it's a weapon none the less. And no-one appreciates being attacked do they?

hey....thats pretty deep...how about this...Humans are mere vehicles, designed to carry living genetic material,to reproduce and then die....People are driven by their dna blueprint, and not by their human reason....every lie is a defence response in order to prevent injury to the human vehicle or host....it is not the humans themselves that are of any value....but the capacity to store the living dna which is important....we cannot help lying, because we as concious beings are not in control of this function...its a defence mechanism.....
