I found both plots more plausible than the NT. There could be religions started based on Lord of the Flies, Back to the Future, Catcher in the Rye, and definitely Stephen King's Towers series.
Just give it a few thousand years, and Star Trek may be the dominate religion. To those doubters, as prophet Spock sayeh "Live long and suffer."
