You were definitely in the right as the law states that in a public place all dogs should be on lead. I have known this happen to lots of people. Just remember to keep your head up and be confident as your staffie will know if you are panicking and will react accordingly. Feel smug because YOU have the well behaved gorgeous dog which SO amazingly better behaved than the person's dog that attacked you !!!

People that don't put their dogs on leads are irresponsible and annoying. Not only is the dog a nuisance to other people but also to other dogs, and bear in mind that many of these owners have no control over the animal, putting all at risk. It has become an image issue. People wear their animals like trophies. I'm sure half of them don't even like the animal they just want to look hard. My friend is petrified of dogs due to being attacked by one and now when she goes out it is a nightmare for her as dogs are roaming everywhere. These people don't take that into consideration, so their selfish as well. I was also out eating lunch one day and this stupid dog owner just allowed the dog to come sniffing around my food. They did nothing, so in the end it was me that had to get rid of the damn thing. There should be a fine for having dogs off their leads.

Wonder why she had 1 on a lead and 3 loose? Was the 1 on the lead more likely to attack other dogs? In this case I think she is wrong to have them loose. Dog owners should only let them off the lead if they can control them.

You are absolutely right i have a Labrador 4 yrs old who will put her hackles up when meeting another dog for The first time. She does not growl and will never bite or fight she can be wagging her tail and running round with excitement and still have her hackles up.We have a lot of open fields with good footpaths through them and there is constantly dogs being walked through. My Labrador is a gun dog and is very obedient, when i ask her to heal she stays until i let her forward again but i still put her on a lead when we meet other dogs just in case then i have her under to tall control if something happens. How does any one really no what there dog will do, one minute you think they are the softest thing on earth and the next thing they could be in a fight because the stupid person who did not put there dog on the lead has just run over and started a fight with yours. Then you end up smacking the person who's dog it was because of there stupidity. But the dog picked the wrong dog for a fight and its them of to the vets for treatment. Its a shame it was not the person who was hurt rather than the dog then they may think of whats best to do next time PUT DOGS ON LEADS.

I totally agree with you,its so annoying when people let there dogs come running over to yours and they have no control over there dogs.I have 2 dogs and my little terrier doesn't like other dogs atall, she attacks them,im a responsible dog owner though and i keep her on the lead unless i know somewhere is very private with no other dogs. You would be amazed at how many dogs come bounding over to mine, and then the owners look at you as if your in the wrong because my dog went for them. There has been no end of times when i have told people that my dog is not in the wrong because she is on the lead.If people can't control there dogs they should get into training to learn,or should never have had a dog in the first place.

How the hell does she know if your dog is vicious ,I have a 9 month old staffy and the only reason i put him on the lead is because he is too friendly and wants to go and say hello to every other dog , but people think i put him on his lead cos he is gonna attack them, you are in the right

she was in the wrong because if her 4 dogs were on the lead they couldn't attack your dog while on the lead. And all dog owners should have there dog on a lead by roads and also if they do not have 100% control of there dog when it isn't on the lead.then these problems wont occur

That makes me SOOOOO mad. My dog isn't very nice with other dogs so as soon as I see one coming I put him on the lead. If the other dogs come over and have a pop at him, he retaliates and I end up having to struggle with him on the lead.
If you see someone putting a dog on the lead then doesn't it make sense that the person is concerned that their dog may not be very good with the others? Why do these morons insist on letting their dogs come running up, barking? They're either blind or just plain stupid. Idiots.

According to the Dangerous Dogs Act it is illegal to have your dogs off the lead in a residential or public area, this being for example a housing estate, town centre etc. However it is not illegal to have dogs off a lead in open nonpublic areas, such as public fields and open parks, as long as it isn't required for them to wear a lead (by council or owner of land). If you feel comfortable that your dog reacts well to other dogs in open space's, why should you immediately put them on the lead when you see another dog. Dogs react well to responsible socialising with other unknown dogs, and I have often found that a dog is more likely to become vicious if they are unable to freely express their natural sense to 'sniff bottoms and wag tails' when being tied down by a lead. Question: Isn't it crueler to never give your dog the opportunity to run around, play and sniff. Surely owners who only take their dogs for a walk on the lead should not be allowed to have them as pets, its not how nature intended it to be, otherwise dogs would be naturally born with leads as body parts!

In this case you are. She could have the dogs off lead if she can control them. Obviously she can't. I have a couple of dogs that I have been working with off lead but the requirement for them to be able to do so is to ignore other dogs when on lead first. I am talking about working them in obedience (heel off lead) not about just letting them romp and play.
