The differences between the two are mainly not spiritual -- but more so political.
The fist caliph (leader) after the Prophets death was Abu Bakr (ru).Abu Bakr (ru) became really sick at one point in his life, and when he thought that it was fatal he called uponthe Muslims to consult them about who would become the next Khalif. He nominated Umar and Ali. Umar (ru) was chosen through majority.
- The shia believe that Ali (ru) should have been chosen because he was the Prophet Muhammed son- in law.
The word "Shia" in Arabic means a group or supportive part of people. The term was shortened from the historical "Shia-t-Ali" or"Party of Ali"
- Sunni Muslims counter that there is no basis in Islam for a hereditary privileged class of spiritual leaders, Sunni Muslims contend that leadership of the community is not a birthright, but a trust that is earned and which may be given or taken away by the people themselves. "Sunni" in Arabic means "one who follows the traditions of the prophet"

That is the major difference, however there are many others such as:
1. In The first kalimah (The declaration of faith) the Sunni's states: "There is no God but Allah, and Muhammed is the messenger of Allah."

The Shia first Kalimah (The declaration of faith) states:
"There is no god but Alláh, Muhammad is the Messenger of Alláh, Alí is the Friend of Alláh. The Successor of the Messenger of Alláh And his first Caliph."

2. Sunnis have to pray 5 times a day, and make wudu to clean themselves -- there are fixed actions of making wudu Shia's wudu differently, and pray differently. They combine their prayers sometimes and pray just 3 times.

3. Sunni's have banned "fixed-term temporary marriage". The Shia's still believe in it.

4. Sunni have been taught from birth taht any kind of self mutilation is a sin. This is because this body is not ours, and was loaned to us by God, thus we have no right to harm it ( In Islam, if something is loaned to you, you are not to harm it beacuse it is not yours.)
The Shias believe that hitting themselves reminds them of a muslim's grief towards the martyrdom of Imam Hussain. Imam Hussain was the son of Ali (ru) but this was not known at that present time -- and the Shias killed him. They grieve over their sins.

These are the differences that I know of, there may be more I'm not too sure. I am not here to promote one over the other, I am just giving facts. I am sunni. I, however have NO idea what the hate is about -- they should just live in peace and let God judge them. I am happy to say that I hate no shia -- I have many shai friends.

-And Allah (swt) knows best.

During Prophets Mohammad time, they were no Sunni or Shia only Muslim. Before he died, The Prophet assigned Imam Ali ( his step son) to be his follower in a very important speech. after his death the Kalifa back then decided that he was the follower after Mohammad and not Ali and he had more money and a bigger army so he tried to kill Ali and his descended and he did, he slayed Imam Hussein ( Imam Ali's and Fatima's the daughter of the Prophet's son) with his entire family and that is how shia and Sunni came too, Shiia follow Imam Ali and Imam Hussein and Sunni follow the Kalifa and the hate each other because Sunnis accept the fact that there Kalifa killed the kids and grand kids OF the Prophet. and then Kalifa started changing in the religion of the Prophet so it will fit him and the Sunni keep following this change and the Shiia still follow the Prophet and Imams

The difference is that there were 4 close followers of the Prophet Muhammad (saw). The Sunnis felt that one of them should have been the next Kalif, while the Shi'a wanted someone else.

In Iraq they sing this song "Shiia'a and Sunni's < They go together like Macs aand Rooni"s" Well anyway it sounds better in their language! Saddam was a Sunni and they are the minority there and are most closely aligned with Syria and Jordan and Palestine. Shiites are the majority and hook up well with Iran and their mullahs.

NO.. majority of all muslims.. love different muslims beneath the umbrella of brotherhood in religion.. its simply the west began this animosity among us to hold matters stirred up within the center east for his or her grasping method... When there's unrest, thats in which the wars are.. its all political and for cash.. Before the west obtained worried.. Muslims of all sects lived part via part, married, have been peers and industry companions.. no person stricken or hated any one.. you almost always wouldnt suppose me if I mentioned.. there are men and women paid to come back on those websites. simply to fan the flames of disorders and publish matters among shia/sunni...

Mo had 2 sons. After he died, they both wanted to be the chief. Those that followed one of them were called shia......those that followed the other were called sunni.

And THAT'S what they're killin each other over.
