Lucifer is a poetic name for 'morning star'. It is a latin word meaning 'Light bearer', and another name for the planet Venus. In Christian terms, lucifer was a fallen angel.

Venus was the Roman goddess of love, the equivalent of Aphrodite in Greek mythology. I didn't know Christians did that, but if certain branches do, it is probably because of the sexuality that she portrays.
