What do you mean? Tape can do HD, unless your camera isn't. If your camera isn't HD, of course, then you're out of luck. Otherwise, the only way you can watch HD video on your TV (cheap) is to connect your camera to your TV. You COULD get an HD-DVD or Blu-ray (preferably blu-ray) burner, but it will be very expensive, and of course, you'll need a player as well, not to mention discs. Best solution, in my opinion, is to connect your camera to your TV for now or downsize to SD, and wait a while before getting blu-ray burner/players. Hope this helps!
---------------EDIT---------------
I don't know what Earl D is talking about, but it's certainly not up to date. There ARE HDV cameras with HDMI output, the Canon HV20, to name one. Also, blu-ray burners cost less than $1,000, not around $2000-$3000. However, if I were you, I'd still wait a while, unless you own a video production company. Hope this helps!

Both Tape and DVDs are HD.
Canon, Sony, JVC all make HD camcorders priced under $1500 that record to Mini-DV tape in either 1080i or 720p formats and you can offload this to a computer via FireWire and edit it in Premier Pro or Vegas + DVD or Avid Pro and then generate an HD file you can send back to the Mini-DV camcorder or burn a traditional DVD disk.
The DVD HD camcorders DON'T use Blu Ray or HD DVD format, but a Sony Propreitary format that requires Vegas + DVD to import and edit.
You will only get HD output if you can get it back to either the DVD or the Mini-DV and then use the composite cables or if one is available the S-Video.
The sad things is no one is putting FireWrite into TVS nor HDMI into Camcorders, but this may happen soon.
Also there are not cheap BluRay nor HD DVD buners. The prices are still in the $2,000 to $3,500 range and are designed for professional studios.
It is anticipated by next year you will see set or computer BluRay or HD DVD burners under $1,000 maybe as low as $600.
At that point in time you might be able to start buring HD disks.
Right now you take your chances on formats that might be incompatble or require conversion software.
In two years you might be able to get an HD camcorder out of the box for $800 with HDMI, FireWire that uses Mini-DV, Blu Ray or HD DVD directly and can send the signal to a computer or set top burner via either FireWire or HDMI or play directly on an HD set with HDMI.
Right now, that puppy don't exist.

Yes - you would need a HD DVD or Blu-Ray burner.
You can wait for the prices to come down - meanwhile, the only way to view the HD video is to connect the HD camcorder to your HDTV monitor.

Like the other two, yes, you can connect the camcorder to the TV and watch it in Hi-Def. Another option, is to get a massive external Hard Drive, hook it up to your TV through HDMI, and use the HD as a media center.
Or even Apple TV, though I don't know if it'll handle High Def yet.

If your computer was connected to your tv, you could transfer the hd footage to the computer, then play it on it and watch it on the tv. Or, connect the camcorder directly to the tv and watch it that way. Your HD camcorder should've come with software to edit and convert on your pc.
