I want a hairless and fairly small dog, that is calm and reserved, but loyal and loving too. Appearance does not matter, I just want a dog for company - a dog that I can put on my lap and watch T.V. with, for example. I have searched for some dog breeds, like the Xolo (hairless mexican dog), but they are not available in the UK
please suggest other dog breeds with a similar temperament and attitude, as well as the same qualities (small, hairless and calm) - i need a small dog due to housing size.
Anyone suggest other

Chinese Crested is your bet bet, they are small, calm, and affectionate. Just research the health issues. Hairless dogs generally have very bad teeth, and go through a period of acne at around 8 months to a year which can last for up to 2 years. They need daily moisturizer, sunblock if they go outside, and a sweater if it's chilly. Other than that, they are just normal dogs. If you want one because of allergies or because you don't want to deal with shedding, there are other small breeds such as the Maltese, Toy Poodle, Bichon Frise, and several of the small terriers that may work as well. Good luck!

Well, if you want a hairless dog, that truly limits the breeds available, but if you simply want a small, calm dog that will make a good companion, then I suggest going to an animal shelter and adopting. It could take time to find what you are looking for, but if you buy a puppy from a breeder, then you will have to go through the training process, which is often harder with smaller dog breeds. You would also have to wait a year or two until the dog matures and calms down. If you adopt, then you could get an older dog that is already mature. This will also ensure size, since with a puppy, you can't always be 100% sure.
For example, I had a purebred papillion that simply grew larger than most papillions. He was 18 pounds, though he wasn't fat at all and he was perfectly healthy!
If you still only want a hairless dog, try checking this website: www.dogbreedinfo.com. Here, you can get information on different dog breeds and find what you are looking for. If you want to adopt, you can check on www.petfinder.com for small dogs up for adoption near you. You might even find a hairless one that needs a good home! Who knows?!
Good luck!

Have a look on the web site "Dog Breed Info Centre"
Hairless dogs there are about 5 I think
Chinese Crested, American Hairless Terrier are 2 can't think of the others they are that web site
There are some dogs that don't loss their hair like the Airedale Terrier a big dog not a lap dog. Have a look on the Kennel Club site, even go in to Pets at Home they have a book with breeders and info

BULLDOG!!!!!
small, shed but not alot except for the seasonal, quiet, very loyal, extremely calm, but will guard u to the death if needed
.
My bulldogs love my sons lap and happily snore away the day as we are at work. They are not a toy breed but are DEFINATELY much, much more quiet and do not have the temperment problems of the toy breeds.
They only require a few blocks a day exercise, are not agressive and definately are happy in a small apartment.
I have shown and had national champion bulldogs and can say I am an expert on them, they would be happy with you.

A bichon frise is a good dog to get as it does not lose hair like other breeds of dog so is great for people with allergies. This breed does need alot of grooming though and can be very noisey.

Remember a dog is a dog, so regardless of the breed or size, they will need some exercise to some degree, and will not tolerate being on you lap 24/7. They need mental stimulation, particularly the smaller terrier dogs who are naturally energetic.

Go to the local animal shelter and visit with the dogs and see which one is closest to the type you are wanting... Every animal I have ever had I got from the pound. It makes you feel a lot better to purchase a dog from the pound than purchase one from someone that is just looking for the ca$h
