I used to work at a perfume counter at a department store and we were told that its all in the different oils that are in the perfume. More high end perfumes and very rare flower oils that are more expensive to grow and others just have the normal flowers. But yea they do make a large profit from frangrances.

Yes, sometimes you're paying for the name or the packaging, but high-quality perfumes are always more expensive than colognes, which are less concentrated. If you want a sophisticated scent that lasts, you have to go with a better brand that's made with quality ingredients. There is a world of difference between Charlie (yuk) and Chanel No. 5 (heavenly).

Celebrity names always add to the price. Also consider the concentration of the scent in perfumes. Some scents, like eau de toilette, have a higher concentration of water than do regular perfumes.

The stuff that goes into the perfume, different extracts and flowers and stuff usually comes from other countries and it's expensive to buy.
I just got a bunch of perfume for free, in the mail from teenfreeway.com I got JLo perfume and Paris Hilton's.

Yes, basically you are paying for the name.
I am sure some manufacturers use ingredients that are more expensive than others, but they are still making TONS of profit.
