Generally when someone says they are religious they are refering that they take part in an organized religion, like a church. Someone who claims to be spiritual tends to believe that they don't need to go through a priest to access their own spirituality, it is generally more personal. Both, people who are spiritual and people who are religious, believe in some sort of a higher power but believe in accessing it in different ways.

Religions are institutions or organizations with their own structure.

Spirituality transcends religion. As someone here already said those of us that are spiritual people have our own intimate relationship with the divine. That does not mean we do not participate in or adopt a religion.

Before religion was spirituality at the beginning of our journey.
For some of us anyway. I know that with or without belonging to a religion or group that I have an inherent spirituality that I was born with. It is self aware and of pure heart and conscience. Can't explain it. I am an imperfect human being that is aware that part of me transcends all of that and more.
Not because someone told me so, I just know.

That they have a personal relationship with the Divine, but that they do not necessarily restrict it to the dogma or teachings of any one church or belief system.

It could also mean that they have a personal relationship that DOES fit within a specific religion or teaching, but that they do not do the "ceremonial" things that are generally associated with that religion.

Spirituality is your personal connection with the Divine. Religion is the man-made structure that's put around it.
