Is there any way to see how much tramadol it takes to give the same pain relief of a 60mg oxycodone. I know these are two different types of meds, but i really do not want to take my oxycodone anymore due to the side affects, but due to my cronic pain i feel i will not get the same pain relief i would as on the oxycodone. If anyone knows how to find this out please let me know. I have heard somewhere that 20mg of hydrocodone is equal to 20mg of oxycodone. I did not know if this is true for tramadol or how to figure out this for tramadol to oxycodone. Thanks

I've taken both meds, and in my experience, you'll never get the same pain relief from Tramadol that you will from Oxycodone at a safe dose. The dose of Tramadol that you would need for that kind of relief would cause seizures... which brings me to a good reason not to take the Tramadol. It has a very high propensity to cause seizures even in people who have never had them before.

If you want to switch because you're worried about addiction, don't let people scare you. As long as you are being responsible with your meds and taking them only as prescribed by your doctor, you are not a junky or an addict. Addiction is a behavior issue, contrary to what some people will tell you, and needing the meds for chronic pain does not make you an addict. Developing a tolerance does not make you an addict. Diabetics need to take insulin every day to control their diabetes... it's the very same thign with pain meds. You have a medical condition and you take a medication to control it. You are no more an addict than a diabetic or a patient with high blood pressure. It's okay to want to change your meds, but it's also okay to need a narcotic long-term for chronic pain. Talk to your doctor. See what he recommends. But don't let anyone make you feel bad about yourself or call you a junky for having a medical condition.

Tramadol is approx 1/15-1/20 the potency of oxycodone. As for hydrocodone vs oxycodone.... hydrocodone is about a 1/3 as potent as oxycodone. You would have to take a massive amount of tramadol to have the same result as 60mg of oxycodone. Tramadol can be dangerous at high doses, you are especially at risk for seizures if you are already on SSRI's for depression/mood disorders/etc.

You need to speak with a Pharmacist.....they know much more than Doctors about the specifics of medications. Alternatively, you can get out a Medical Dictionary and a Physician's Desk Reference (PDR), and try to figure it out yourself. A Pharmacist, however, is the fastest, safest, most knowledgeable source of answers to this type of question. As an aside, 20mg of Hydrocodone is NOT equal to 20mg of Oxycodone. Two different drugs with two different delivery actions.

You should speak to your doctor with reguards to changing medication. Or if you want to know the facts before you speak to your doctor, go and speak to a pharmacist.

You really need to talk to your doctor if you want to change your medication and/or dose.
