Well, Duke Franz Ferdinand got shot. that is a short term cause. Nationalism, imperialism, an arms race between britain and germany, and alliances with countries brought countuires against each other. There is more causes but these ones stand out.

Secret Military alliances that didn't trust one another that have been organized one generation prior to the outbreak of war in 1914.

The assassination of the hare to the throne of Austria-Hungary didn't help keep much of the peace either!
