2 year olds do NOT need a dog. They just don't have the concept of the dog being a living thing rather than a toy, and they often hurt the dog, not because they are mean but because that's what toddlers do. It is also easy for the dog to hurt the toddler, again not because he's mean but puppies are rambunctious and they tend to use their jaws in play and can easily knock a small child over. They also may retaliate for the pain the toddler causes them.
Raising a puppy is a lot like having another toddler to look after, it's a lot of work.
Since you will be the one doing the work, unless YOU really want a dog then don't get one.

If you don't want a dog, don't get one. I realize that sounds simplistic, but a dog is not unlike a 2 year old in some ways - they really need attention and care and some actual effort. They are endless joy when you have them, but if you would resent the responsibility, the dog might be the one who pays for it. If money is tight, you might come to resent the cost of good health care and stuff that a dog requires, too.
If you're not entirely sure, babysit someone else's dog for a week or two in your regular routine and see how it goes. That was how I decided I could handle a dog in my life, and I have never been sorry. I will never be without a dog again. I have two now, and they're my delight. Of course, having no children, it's not the same load on me as it would be on you. Try it and see if you like it.

Make sure the two year old and the dog spend some time together before you decide. I don't think you want a puppy right now- they really are alot of work, but if you get an older dog you might find that you like it. They do help distract two year olds from the trouble they cause whern they're bored. If you have a big enough yard, and a calm enough dog, you may find that you enjoy it. I have an older golden retreiver, and the kids just adore her.

Those are all questions you need to weigh out. Do I have time? Who will take care of the dog (we all know kids wont we were kids once). Do we have a big enough yard? Will the dog need to be tied up all the time? Would we be better off getting a cat or fish. On the other hand depending on what kind of dog you get it will be a great protector of your child.I had a rottweiler when my child was three it would not let anyone in the yard if she was outside playing, even people the dog knew had to wait for someone to let them in the yard. These are things you need to consider before getting a dog.

Make sure you tell your husband that you are not the only one that is going to take care of it. Start off with a smaller dog. I think your son would really like a dog. When I was little I wasn't alowed to have a dog and it broke my heart.

If you're not home enough to take care of it, then I say no. Not fair to the dog. If he wants it so bad, HE should take care of it. Cats are easier maintance if you're looking for a pet.

I think that if you are up to the responsibility of having a dog then you shoud get one. I have two dogs myself and I love them alot but they are alot of work. They make great companions especially for younger children.
