My son started wearing glasses (well he was supposed to anyway) at the age of 2 1/2. When we got his glasses I tried plastic frames, these didn't even make it all the way onto his face. He wanted wire frames like Momma's, so that's what I got him. He wouldn't wear his glasses either. It took a year for my son to get to where he would wear his glasses all the time. Now he won't go to sleep unless his glasses are on his night stand next to the bed so he can find them in the morning. He will be 4 in 2 months.

At first I tried to get him to wear them every time I thought about it. He would wear them for 5 to 30 minutes at a time.

Another thing I did was to put them on him and set a timer for the amount of time I knew he would wear them. (Yes, I actually had to set the timer for 3 minutes, then 5 minutes and so on gradually increasing the time) This worked for awhile.

When this stopped working I made him wear them when we went places like: a friends house, Grandma's house, or in the basket at the grocery store (got to watch him close with this one, I almost lost my son's first pair of glasses at Wal-mart the first day. He took them off after 30 minutes).

When he started preschool last August he was still taking his glasses off in the car, so we put them in his glasses case and in his backpack until he got to school. When he got to preschool part of his routine was to put his glasses on. Anytime the teachers saw him start to take off his glasses they redirected him. After a couple weeks of preschool he wore his glasses all the time AT school. He still wouldn't wear them at home.

Around Thanksgiving he started wearing his glasses home on the bus and leaving them on for an hour or so after school. Each day he seemed to leave them on for longer and longer. By Christmas he was wearing his glasses all the time all day long.

Be patient and work with him. He has to get used to the way they feel. My son had a little bit of sensory overload because he is so nearsighted. Everything was blurry! And then we put glasses on his and he could see clearly, but he got past it and doesn't part with his glasses very well now. Hang in there. He will eventually figure out that he can see better and will want to wear them. I just hope it doesn't take as long for your son as it did mine.

Oh, and he's a boy so a back up pair of glasses is a very good thing!
Good Luck!

Sorry this is so long, but one more thing - if the glasses are not adjusted properly he will not want them on. Check for red spots behind his ears and on his nose. If he's got red spots from the glasses they need to be adjusted.

Point out children's character's with glasses. He may be a little young for Harry Potter, but Arthur wears them and also a character on the Backyardigans. There was also an episode of Barney about one of the children getting glasses. Also, the glasses frames should be his choice. Take him to the store and let him pick out new frames. Many eye care places have an exchange policy on the frames if you don't like them. Good luck!

I went through the same thing with my son when he was small, however he was only 10 months when he started to wear glasses. We tried the teddy bears with glasses and we all already did wear them so that was no change. What finally worked best for him was the eye glass strap attached to his glasses to help keep them on. We also would give him extra little rewards for keeping them on such as an extra cookie at snack time or more one on one time with mom or dad. Believe me it works.

I think the answer from 'Mommy' is the best answer, that is what I would suggest too. Good luck

well i'd start by having him wear the glasses during some of his favorite activities, such as watching a favorite movie... you definately want to make sure that you tell him how proud he his that he is wearing his glasses and keep inforcing his good behavior... i think the glasses on teddies and you wearing glasses is a great idea... you should definately keep that up... i hope this helps... good luck!

Maybe you could try making it a game. For instance say "mommy or daddy will play such and such game with you but you have to leave your glasses on" Work him up from 10 minutes at a time. Read him a story but tell him he needs to leave them on so he can see the pictures better. If your lucky maybe in a week he will forget he even has them on.
Since he just got them if they are a strong prescription maybe they are giving him a headache.

have you tried saying how good they look and how only big children get to wear glasses. or maybe trying not to make a big deal let him get used to the idea. when hes watches tv maybe say he can only watch it if he wears them if he takes them off just keep putting them back on and say no u must wear them.

My sister had the same problem with my niece. Then they decided to go back and let her pick them out. That worked but when my sister bought an extra pair "just in case" my niece broke those. Perhaps take him and let him pick out a cool color for the holder thing (you know what I am talking about right?? lol) and the case. Then maybe he will like them. Good luck

Try showing him pictures of spec wearing celebs that he recognises, that way he might come to think it's cool to wear them. The kid in the Stuart Little films might be a good place to start.
