No, but labs are the best. Make sure you have plenty of time to spend with them, and buy them plenty of toys to chew. If you don't they will become board and tear up your house and yard. Also look for one that has a big bump on it's head. Most people call this a smart not, for some reason the labs with those seem to be brighter than the ones without it. Also Labs have can have a lot of heath problems, so you may be spending a lot on vet bills.

Go to your local kill-shelter. Large black dogs are always there, and many are pure-bred labs. Also check your classifieds. There are usually loads of 6 month- 1 year old labs (with papers) free to a good home.

In all seriousness, Black Labradors are exceptionally common. You can easily find purebred Black Labradors fighting for their lives in many local rescues & shelters.
Try saving a life, before contacting a breeder. The rescue dog will appreciate it.

Although I believe rescuing a dog is the best route to take, if you are insistent on buying a purebred black lab, may I recommend Waterdog Kennels in Temple, GA. They specialize in breeding and training black labs. I had my RESCUED black lab trained there.

The best way, to get a really good dog is to go to the Dog Shows and talk to the breeders. They love their breed and will steer you in the right direction for the breed you want, and what you want to use the dog for (family pet, hunting, showing).
There usually is a section in the large city newspapers, listing the all-breed AKC shows and their times and locations.

if you are looking for a "working Lab" this is the only place to go because the parents MUST have their health certifications in order to advertise here. It is also the web site for Field Trial News.

www.petfinder.com
Just type in your location, animal, and breed you're looking for.
You should definately adopt from a shelter rather than purchase from a breeder. It will be much cheaper, and the money you pay goes to helping other homeless animals.

petfinder.com - also, check with your local Humane Society. Full-blooded dogs are often given up and can even come with papers. You can be put on a waiting list at your local shelter and they will call you when what you are looking for comes in. :) Good luck!
