As a former schoolbus driver I can see both side of the arguement. The one side says that having kids buckled in would save lives for the same reason they do in your car. Buses are designed like tanks though. The seats are padded and the chance of a bus rolling over from being hit is pretty unlikely. The problem is if there is an accident serious enough to where the bus has to be evacuated immmediatly and all the kids are buckled in, then the driver has to face the possibility of having to unbuckle several or most of the kids. There may not be time to do that. And you cant assume the kids will remain calm and do what you tell them to do. You can't expect adults to do that. Most accidents cause the kids to be knocked into the back of the seat in front of them or at the worst, onto the floor. The may get scrapes and scratches but at least they will not be strapped in and in a position where they can't free themselves. Statistically a schoolbus driven by a trained professional is the safest means of conveyance, even over flying. As long as the kids stay in their seat and aren't jumping around or standing, they will be safe.

The way it was explained to me when I asked this question (while I was in high school), was that the county I lived in felt that the seats were high enough to prevent children from going forward should a crash happen. When I asked about children sliding under, or perhaps flying up they didn't have an answer. Sorry I can't be of more help.... sad to say that the county is supposed to have one of the best academics in the country.... just not the best bus system! :(

I have been on about this for ages! I resent the fact that I would be given a ticket if my child was not buckled up in the car (which she always is), yet kids are put on buses that don't even HAVE them. They are more likely to become a projectile in a huge bus with loads of room for them to get thrown around like rag dolls. Years ago, when I was a cop, I had to go to the scene of and accident-it was not pretty, all I am going to say. I think its another one of those preposterous things that no one cares about changing. Crazy, just like the food industry

That is one of the most responsible answers that I have seen yet!! I think that you are absolutly right because our kids are our future and they need to be buckled up too. Especially with all of the accidents involving busses these days. It is way dangerous for them not to have them and the school board knows this. So I have a question for you. What do you think we could do to change that issue??

Here's the simple answer. The people who make the laws don't have kids on the public school buses. Therefore, they could care less about the rest of us.

I've wondered that for years. I remember going on a school bus with my son's class on a field trip. We had to go up this winding, narrow, and steep road to get to where we were going. It was scary and the kids are all just turned around backwards and every which way.

Shoot. When I was a kid sometimes they would have to shove 3 of us onto a seat. Probably why they don't put seatbelts- doesn't limit how many they can stuff in there!
They have limits on class sizes...

That's been an ongoing issue for a long time. I don't believe they have any intentions of ever putting them on buses.
I hope & pray when my baby starts school he never has to ride a bus.

I have thought the same. Of all the places seatbelts belong, I would think a school bus would be one.

Well I'm not sure...but I guess if the State thought it was necessary to have seltbelts on the bus they would get them. I'm sure you are paying plenty on taxes to get them.
