How did the Jeep Liberty Diesel sell in 2006? Why did Chrysler discontinue it for 2007? By all accounts I think it sold pretty well, as when I tried to find one for myself in late 2006, my local dealer could not locate one within a reasonable distance away from me. I really want one of these vehicles, but hesitate to buy used. Will Jeep bring them back? I don't want the larger Jeep SUV, rather the Liberty in a diesel.

At the dealership level I can say they sold way better than DCX expected, but couldn't meet the '07 emissions requirements as somebody stated. I can also say that they are training technicians for the '08 diesel which is usually an indicator that it will happen.

I work at Toledo Jeep assembly, they quit building them because they were not selling well. Also they had a problem with meeting future pollution requirements with that engine. No they don't plan on bringing back a diesel for the US in the new redesigned Liberty. They do build diesel for export only.

I believe they stopped making it because the diesel engine added to the cost of the vehicle significantly without much gain in fuel economy. So it didn't sell well or make much sense. Unless you truly need off-road capability, you'd be much better off with a Toyota RAV4, HOnda CRV, Mazda Tribute, or Ford Escape. All of those handle better, have more room, better fuel economy , are more comfortable, and have higher resale value.
Good Luck.

The motor in the 06' wouldnt pass the federal reg's for 07' as per a new one. There is rumored debate that they will have an 08' but nothing offical so far as I know yet.
