As kittens, cats massage (knead) when nursing to increase milk flow. It is a carried over habit the when they are adults.

My cat died and i was very upset about it, so later on we got 2 new kittens, plus one later on. Before the kittens came to live with us I started making/knitting a cat bed. I only got the bottom of the bed done, but my cat, Zeke, liked it just the way it is, i know this because when ever he sees he will run over to it he starts to MASSAGE it and start purrrring, then finally pick it up in his mouth and keep massaging, sometime he would walk away with it if he saw is brother or Elijah, or other cat, its so cute. So the answer to your question is that your cat just likes his bed and it happy to have it.

A cat has scent gland on the paw of his feet. He like to keep his scent on his bed. Also the old term for this is kneading biscuits or making bread. I have a 11 year old cat who nurses on his tail. He has done this from the time he was a kitten. They are showing that they are happy when they need, it is their way of showing you they love their eds.

This 'making puddings' stimulates a 'let down' reflex in Mother cats when kittens are suckling. It's a lifelong comfort thing cats do.

Mine does too -- when they are babies they get great happiness fron kneading (massaging) their mama's tummies to get milk-- they are warm, they are getting their milk, they are purring and they are with their mama - sheer bliss.

So they knead even when adults and usually purr when they knead -- its a "cat thing" and it makes them happy and it makes us giggle.

It's sort of like us fluffing our pillows before we go to bed at night.

cats do that like a child sucks its thumb, it is soothing to them, they did it to theyre mothers to activate the milk flow, and when they got milk they felt relaxed fully and tired, so it is a habbit for them.
