Well I am no expert by any means. But my friends fuel pump just went out. And initially the check engine had come on a few times for about month and he did nothing. Then his fuel gauge on the dash stopped working. Next his truck would not start and he FINALLY took it to the shop and it was fuel pump. They had to replace the whole thing for about $1,000.

Go to an auto parts store and buy a fuel psi gage if you have fuel injection the will be a port on the fuel rail to plug into, If you are using a carburetor you will have to install a T fitting in your fuel line with an adapter

usually on a gm product you can hear a whining or a buzz or a whistle sound just get down by the back the car and listen or you can disconnect the gas line from the fuel on the outlet side and you will know immediately

One way of doing this and it takes two people to do this. One person gets in the van and you unscrew your gas cap. He/she turns the key on but do not start the van. You then put your ear to where you put the gas in and listen for a noise and if you do not hear a noise it may be bad.
