Go to the shelter! The pet stores get their puppies from puppy mills all over the country. Your local paper may have breeders selling dogs, but you need to be very care full about buying a dog and not rescuing a dog. If you don't find what your looking for at a shelter go on line to petfinders.com and see what breed rescue groups might have for you. Thanks for doing your homework and saving a life.

I have adopted many animals from our shelter. Go to the shelter and look around. Take a couple that you like out for a walk, play with them. See how they interact with you. Then come back in a day or two and do the same. This will help to see which dog best fits in with your family. Ask many questions about the dog: circumstances under which he came there, neutered or spayed, house-broken, any bad habits they may have noticed. That kind of thing. Most shelters have a program for special rates to spay a female or neuter a male.. You may even find one that is already done. Happy hunting. Hope you enjoy your new pet. Also, make sure it is current on its vaccinations.

If you are looking for a dog that NEEDS a home then go to a shelter. If at all possible adopt from a shelter that does NOT have a no kill policy. The dogs in these shelters are in need of a home or they run the risk of being euthenized. The dogs at no kill shelters can wait a little longer to find a home. It is great that you are so dedicated and concerned about helping a dog find a home. Now you've just got to go out and find the neewest member of your family!!

P.S. Visit petfinder.com to find information on shelters and adoptable dogs in your area!!

The ANIMAL SHELTERS!! these dogs don't have a good chance of making it out alive!!!! Buying one from the pet store is not smart!! those dogs are not always healthy, but the shelter dogs are in need of homes, they are healthy, vaccinated, fixed, most of the time microchipped with a free vet check! so please... adopting a dog from a shelter is best, also the price should be relatively cheep, and they have a wide variety of animals and continue to get more in on a daily basis! you will be saving a life!!!

DONT BREED OR BUY WHILE SHELTER ANIMALS DIE!!!

Seriously ask yourself what you want your dog for,and how much time u have a day for it,then go ahead and look at rescues and shelters.
Avoid any hunting breed mixes unless u are confident you can train them as hunting mixes are most apt to attack other dogs and cats and children due to the genetic instinct for pursuit and attack bred into them.
Small breeds can be more of a problem then most large ones as they are noisy, require more potty breaks and can have either shyness or agression problems due to abuse.
The main thing is do not rush to a choice, spend time with the dog you think you want, see how you mesh,be prepared to deal with problems due to abuse or neglect.
I have only found one dog in the dozens and dozens I have worked with that I felt could never be safe around humans so there is always hope.
The easiest way to find the one that you need and needs you is to ask the shelter workers, we know our dogs and will do our best to help!!

Animal shelter is the best place, for many reasons.

Pet stores usually carry ''puppy mill'' dogs, which are known to have health problems, due to excessive & irresponsible breeding.

Looking through the paper, there are some responsible pet owners who need to rehome their animal, but then there are people who breed their dogs, for the $$. Therefore, they usually don't spend any money on vet checks, vaccinations, etc.

An animal shelter will provide up-to-date vaccinations, health records on the animal, the history of the animal (if provided), and most likely, the animal will be spayed/neutered before you bring him/her home.

It's the best deal, for the best health.

Adopt a shelter dog - you are truly saving a life!

Pet stores and breeders only add to the pet overpopulation problem - and you don't want to encourage a bad breeder by buying a sickly/poorly bred dog.

Shelter dogs usually come already Spayed/neutered, vaccinated and current on heartworm meds too! That makes getting a new puppy a LOT cheaper!

Out of those 3 choices, definitely the shelter. Good breeders NEVER sell to pet stores, and they rarely advertise in the paper either, so neither of those is a good way to find a dog.

I have 5 dogs, 2 mutts, 1 shelter dog mutt, and two german shepard pet store dogs. My 3 Mutts from shelters are healthy & happy. My two pet store dogs have allergies and hip displacia. My advice is go to a shelter and look for a mutt. They dont seem to have all the problems that pure breeds do.

Shelter dogs because they need homes just like pet stores dogs-but my reason for that is to stop puppy mills.
