Imagine your life without the person...if that life seems empty, hollow and devoid of all purpose, then you are in love.
Also, when you wake up and your first thought is what you can do to make the person happy, then you are in love.

Love is the connection of your soul with someone else's. It's sharing your life experience with them and being the other person's friend. Love is pure and comes without decision... Lust is the desire and whim that everything is yours. No thought put forward into the other person. No compromising. A completely shallow way of believing you're in love. Usually, you know very little about the person you lust after
Love and lust are inextricably intertwined. Lust is ground zero for hormones -- it's nature's way of bringing the opposite sexes together to mate. In fact, without lust, it's doubtful that love between a man and a woman would have a chance to prosper at all.
So lust can be seen as one end of a broad continuum, which may or may not culminate in romantic love. Love is the most ennobling of human emotions -- transcendental, exalted and capable of engendering emotional states, which can make the male of the species "want to be a better man."
Men fight wars over lust, but they make homes and families for love

Contrary to popular belief, it always starts out as lust. It's how one evolves those feelings to a level more than self-satisfaction that determines love, or not. It is also how one continues to exhibit care and affection. Add a little luck and you may find yourselves in love on a very deep level.
(awesome answer, Kristina77, but I think love does come with decision...)

If there is commitment, mutual trust, and a willingness to do just about anything for each other, then you have love, otherwise all you have is lust. Satisfying your bodily hunger for sex.

If you can talk for hours without getting all over each other and actually have fun with the conversation. Also, if you can be in the bathroom the same time that person is pooping and not get grossed out completely - it's LOVE!

When you 'choose' to get out of a nice warm bed to get him a cup of coffee just as he's waking up, and you have little time to get off to work, but you take the moment.
And watch for him to do the same.

when you can spend time together doing pretty much nothing more than just watching tv or a movie, say absolutely nothing to each other, just sit there, and still just be completely happy without requiring anything else for that moment.
congrats.
