My mom died of a heart attack at the age of 37. My father, after battling the effects of a stroke for 7 years, died of heart disease at the age of 59.
I am 31 and am wondering if I am doomed to suffer their same fate. I try to eat right. Hardly eat any meat. Eat lots of fruits and veggies and have totally eliminated fried foods from my diet. Is all this being done in vain? Is their fate mine as well??

My father died of a heart attack, and I've outlived him, but I've been more careful. They have technology available now that he didn't have. Last month, I had a stress echo cardiogram, and they found a problem, and immediately did a angioplasty, and corrected the problem. That procedure wasn't available when he was alive, and it might have saved my life. I've been recommeding this test to people my age and risk factors. You might want to consider it too.

It sounds like you are on the right track. Make sure you do regular exercise a few times a week, nothing too strenuous, just enough to raise your heart rate and stay healthy. Talk to your doctor about other preventative measures, like for example the use of aspirin.

You might have a pre-existing condition but if you eat right, exercise you might delay it. I don't think you are doomed to the same fate as your parents, just more likely. Just keep doing what you are doing and you should be fine.

If you eat like crap and are overweight or dont exercise you may be headed down the same path. Make sure you get a physical every year. Most people who have heart attacks is due to being overweight and out of shape.

well, see a doctor. good chance you have hypertension.

if it's a family issue, especially on both sides.. time to get yourself checked out and attend to any matters that are effecting you as of this point.

you are doomed.. but catching any difficulties early and maintaining yourself in the way a doctor suggests will help aleviate some major issues or put them off..

:D

(knows this, but i put mine off... don't be dumb like me!)
