The idea of an eternally burning torture pit did not originate with God. God neither wants or needs that kind of cheap "revenge". That "hell" is a human invention, and not a very nice one, at that.
The reality is that death, and it's nasty companion, "hell" (i.e. the grave) are scheduled to be tossed into the incinerator (that is, The Lake of Fire), along with all the rest of the trash (that is, anything that would cause harm or suffering in God's Kingdom), and burned up...destroyed completely.
You can read about this in Revelation 20:13-14.
It is very unfortunate that a mistranslation has mislead so many people into believing in eternal horror. When you think about it, though, it sort of goes with Satan's original lie..."you won't surely die.." Mankind has been insisting on "the immortality of the soul" ever since, but the truth is, that God has said "the soul that sinneth, it shall DIE..."
Oh, yeah...your original question...I totally sympathize with atheists who are tired of being threatened with hellfire. I think it would be so much better to tell them about the love of God that is not willing that ANY should perish....He so wants eternal life for you!
Think about it, Sho Nuff!!

I once had a dream that trout gained legs and began eating fisherman, does that mean something too?
Edit: I misunderstood the question, but I'm leaving up the original answer anyway because I'm honest like that.

If the house was really on fire, but the atheist just somehow couldn't and wouldn't see the truth, would that make the fire and smoke any less real?

The proposition that God exists and that Jesus is his Son is either true or false, in and of itself, and is not dependent upon your perspective of whether you think it is true or false, or a good or a bad idea...
