My surgeon planned to use Clindamycin, since I am allergic to penicillin. I am also allergic to the mycins, so he asked me to find out what antibiotic I could take.

I continue to research. Seems each one I find is not recommended if one has had a serious reaction to penicillin .

If you or your surgeon are dead set on getting a preop IV antibiotic, I'd go with a cephalosporin (Ancef - cefazolin, 1 g - 2 g IV) unless you have anaphylactic reaction to penicillin. Allergic reactions to cephalosporins are infrequent except in patients with severe IgE-mediated reactions to penicillin, some of whom have experienced anaphylaxis upon first exposure to cephalosporins.

If you have experienced anaphylaxis, and your surgeon is adamant about IV antimicrobial prophylaxis (i.e., giving one dose of antibiotics prior to your surgery) then go with Levaquin, Cipro or even Aztreonam, though these are quite expensive.

Some (including me) would argue that you don't need IV antimicrobial prophylaxis for a thyroidectomy unless there is a good chance that surgery will involve opening the trachea or esophagus. The infection rate is so low that adding a preop IV antibiotic does little if any to decrease the infection rate.

IF HE DOESN'T KNOW THE ANSWER THEN WHY ARE YOU LETTING HIM DO SURGERY ON YOU!

TELL HIM TO GIVE YOU BACTRIM DS, THEN DRAW HIM A DIAGRAM AS TO WHERE YOUR THYROID IS AT.

AND TO THE FIRST PERSON THAT ANSWERED - ZITHROMAX IS A MYCIN>>> ARE YOU HER SURGEON?

ya know I wasn't thinking when I answered earlier. You really do not need to go to a physician that will not take the time to research your medications.

Sorry about the previous stupid answer!
