Nothing for $70 a night. This is a city where $200 a night is a bargain. You do not want a rental car in NYC, that will be $100 a day and it is just another expense you don't need. You take the subway everywhere. It is the fastest way to go around NYC. NYC is not spread out like London. It is vertical rather than horizontal. Instead book at the Marriott at Newark airport. If you book far enough in advance online you can get a $89 a night rate. It's a lovely hotel with an indoor pool. Take the monorail from the airport to Penn Station in Newark and from there it's a 15 minute train ride to Penn Station in NYC. There may be some cheap hotels in Queens, too, where you can take a subway, but I don't know them. I take the subway after midnight, and I am a middleaged woman. I just get in a car with other passengers. There are undercover police in the subway cars. There are also undercover police at the Newark and Penn train stations looking for narcotics. That sleeping bum may be an officer.
Make an appointment for the pre-theater dinner at the Four Seasons restaurant, one of NYC's finest restaurants. If you are seated by 6:15, it is $65 a person for a gourmet meal from appetizer through dessert and impeccable service. Normally that meal would be double that. Jacket and tie required for men. Ask if you can sit in the pool room. In US we tip 20% for good service, not 10% like in England. 15% for average service. I tip 25% at the Four Seasons because the service is incredible. If you use the advanced search through resolved questions on yahoo answers, you will find lots of ways to get theater tickets cheap, places to shop and things to do in NYC. Have fun.

if you want to stay in the city itself, do not rent a car. If you are a tourist, do not drive into Manhattan, its not for the faint of heart, and if you do, you will need your $70 a day just for parking.
Once I walked from Columbus Circle (59th Street), down Broadway to the Staten Island Ferry, it took 4 hours.

70 a night is impossible.....you may get that rate to park the car. Unfortunately that is a serious answer. And with the location you want you're really going to need to spend at least 200 a night...plus parking.
