Ok, I just got selected for a low income apartment in the Bronx NY. I currently live in Brooklyn NY with my fiance and son in a 2 bedroom apartment paying 1400. I applied for a low income apartment in the Bronx and was selected for it. It's a 2 bedroom for 871 a month.
Just today I went to go see the apartment and the neighboorhood is nice and the building is beautiful. The apartment is very small though. The living room was the size of a dining room and the bedrooms were small.
The question is we want to save money for our wedding next year and also to purchase a home in 2009. Do I just pick up and move 20 miles away and find a new babysitter for my son and just say what the hell or should I stay in Brooklyn.
BTW, my fiancee didn't see the apartment yet and he's going to see it tomorrow but I think he's going to say it's too small but it's nice.
If anybody know about getting selected thru a lottery know that its a gamble and fortunate I was selected for one. What do I do?

I would certainly move.20 miles is not the end of the earth. The rent would be almost half of what you're paying now and if you're trying to save that is one sure way of doing it.
If you're planning to buy a home in 2009,you wouldn't be in a smaller apt. very long and could make do.You both work so you're only there evenings and weekends anyway.
I say you are very lucky to have won the lottery and I would never hesitate to move there.A lot of people would wish they were in your shoes
I'm sure you can replace your babysitter with a good reliable one in the Bronx.
As for your dog..........would you have a family member or friend who would keep it for you?I wouldn't let the dog keep me from moving however not under the circumstances. The lower rent alone is a major bonus for all of you..
Good luck on making your decision.

It's advice you need (advise is the act of giving advice).
It's your decision to make the move and if it would be worth the savings in travel time/distance from your work or wherever you may need to go.
I don't know how difficult it is to find good sitters there, so can't answer your question re: that.
Would the $529/mo rent savings be worth it with the other changes/adjustments you'd be making? How much of that savings would you actually realize (per month) and how long would it take you to build that into substantial savings for a wedding and house?
These are things you need to sit down and look at seriously, go over your budget and figure out where the money would be saved and if that amount would be worth any inconveiences due to the move.
Good luck!

If you are serious about saving money then sacrifies the space. If you plan on buying a house in 2009 that is 2 years away, smile price to pay all the way around. As for a new sitter, kids adjust well, as long as they see mom/dad are happy they tend to fall into line with that. Good luck.

If the only reason you would take the low income housing would be to save for your wedding and/house, don't take it. Let the families who really need it (i.e so they can afford food, clothes, etc) have a better chance.
There are a lot of people out there that would be thrilled with the apartment, since they can't afford anything else. ("beggars can't be choosers")
Since you obviously are not a "beggar", I'd pass and stay where you are.

I think that you should talk to him about it and see what he thinks. If I were you I would probably move there. You would be saving money and it would be worth it in the long run. That way you can have some money for the wedding and the house of your dreams. You might want to look into getting a loan so that way you can get your house sooner. Good luck!

You take it and save the money for the house. You do not know when you are going to be selected. You will save money on rent and you can find a new babysitter.

youd be saving 500 a month and 20 miles really isnt all that far, i say go for it but first discuss it with your fiance and discuss the pros and cons, you could be uncomfortable for a while in a small apartment but it would be better for your family in the long run.

Go for it. Get the smaller apartment. Save up and get married. Babysitters are everywhere. You only live once, you have an opportunity, go for it!

You should save the money when you can.
If you only plan on being there for a year or two to advance yourself in life then I'd say go for it.
