If a marauding band of bikers descends on a rest stop bathroom, drunk and puking their guts out all over the restroom, a hapless janitor with faith in a god might see this as a clear sign that this he's in the wrong job, and move on to bigger and better things, thereby perhaps attributing to god the inspiration as a kind of salvation.
Another non-religious janitor might just sigh, clean up the mess, and look forward to a nice cold beer later on, and coincidentally invent some new vomit cleaning device and become successful.
It depends on the point of view of the one who witnesses these "works" it would seem. One might attribute what happens to faith, another might attribute it to misfortune. In either case it's just crap as far as this example goes.

"God" is able to view every thing that is, was, or shall be, all at once, while we are only able to view a very small bit of it, and usually in the present. Ways that look mysterious to us, may be entirely understandable, if we were able to see them from a God's eye view.

"God works in mysterious ways " is a cliche. He Does small things because somethings are for personal referance only and he's trying to teach us to be humble.
