My daughter was bitten by another girl in daycare. The bite did break the skin, and there is a bit of bruising of course. We of course cleaned and disinfected it. It seems to look clean and is not discoloured. Is it advisable to take her to a doctor to have it looked at? Being that it looks clean and does not seem to bother her at all, can I avoid the doctor and take her if it gets worse or if there are other symptoms? What symptoms would I look for that would need a doctor visit?

Man, some of these people are so critical and cranky....I'm a mommy and have taught preschool for 10 years. I think what you've done sounds just fine, but since it broke the skin, I would, at the very least, call my doctor and ask for symptoms to be concerned about.
As far as I know, it turning red, oozing, getting warm, or your daughter running a fever are warning signs of infection.
And what's it matter if it's your first kid or your 10th? You are right to be concerned and cautious when some kid bites your child and breaks the skin and it bruises. That's called being a good parent. : )

Yes I would take your child to the doctor. The human mouth has tons of bacteria. This is what I looked up on Baby Centre

What should I do if another child bites my toddler?
It's not uncommon for a child to bite another child during play or out of frustration. Usually the skin isn't broken and the wound isn't serious.

If the skin is broken, though, it's a different story. The human mouth is full of bacteria, and the risk of infection is 10 to 15 percent. Serious bites to the face, hands, or genitals can be especially dangerous.

If your toddler has been bitten and the skin isn't broken, simply wash the area with mild soap and water.

If the skin is broken, wash — but don't scrub — the wound with mild soap and running water for three to five minutes, then cover it with a clean bandage. If the wound is bleeding, apply pressure with a clean, dry cloth and elevate the area if possible.

If the skin is broken, you'll need to take your toddler to see his doctor, who will clean and examine the wound. She'll also give you directions for keeping the wound clean.

Unless the bite is very serious or on your toddler's face, the doctor will probably prefer not to give your child stitches. Stitching the bite closed can increase the risk of infection.

The doctor may prescribe a short course of antibiotics to prevent infection, depending on the location and severity of the bite.

What kinds of infections can be spread by biting?
Bites can transmit bacteria such as staph and strep that normally exist in the human mouth. It's also possible to transmit serious illnesses like hepatitis.

Although experts don't rule out the possibility of HIV (the virus that causes AIDS) being transmitted by a human bite, it's extremely unlikely. For HIV to be transmitted, the person who is infected would have to be bleeding, break the skin of the person he is biting, and bleed into the wound. There are no reported cases of HIV transmission through a human bite without blood-to-blood contact.

How can I tell if the area is infected?
If your toddler shows any of these signs of infection, call the doctor immediately:
• Increased swelling, redness, or tenderness

• Pus

• Fever of 100 degrees or higher

• Red streaks or a feeling of heat emanating from the bite

Also see your child's doctor if the bite doesn't heal in ten days.

What can I do to prevent future bites?
If your toddler was bitten at daycare, talk to the provider right away. Ask her to keep an eye on the situation and to alert the parents of the child who bit your child.

If an older sibling bit your child, you'll want to address the cause of the sibling's behavior and keep an eye on him when he's with your toddler.

The doctor may prescribe a short course of antibiotics to prevent infection, depending on the location and severity of the bite. The mouth is FULL of bacteria (like staph). Better safe than sorry!

You did the right thing by cleaning and disinfecting it! I would just keep it cleaned and if it gets infected call the doctor. If it gets red in the area around the bite, swollen or oozing it might be infected. Usually if the area around the bite is just a little bit red, cleaning with peroxide, will take care of it. Though if it persists I would call the doctor.
