You really shouldn't make them sit on the potty for more than five minutes. This is what my doctor told me anyways.
Have them sit on the potty for five minutes every hour. Have a potty party, have your friend call and pretend to be your child's favorite character (my child's favorite was Bob The Builder) I had my brother call & pretend to be Bob The Builder and tell him how wonderful he was doing. Always clap, even when nothing happens. You have to make this a BIG DEAL! Make them feel like going potty is SO MUCH FUN ((*_*))
After a few days, that is all that they will want to do!
Good Luck!!!

I'd say 5-10 minutes. You know your child the best. If it's a boy, stock up on Fruit Loops so you can have target practice. Boy or Girl, put some children's books in the bathroom so they don't have to sit there like it's a punishment. I read a book once that said to move the training potty into the kitchen so it was easier access. I couldn't stand the thought of doing it with my two, but you could give it a try! For those of you who said they wanted ideas: Tape a piece of paper on the bathroom door. Buy some stickers with your child's favorite cartoon character on them. Everytime your child goes (really goes) to the bathroom, let them take a sticker and put it on the sheet. Don't let them use these "special" stickers for anything else. If you want, give them a special treat after so many stickers are on the sheet. Good Luck, everyone!

I would say every 15 minutes put them on for about 5 minutes. That is what I did with my niece. She was completely trained in 3 days. Still has occasional accidents but she is only 2. I never put her in pull ups other then for naps or bed, she wore regular undies. I would give her stickers on a sheet if she went and told her if she peed in her panties she lost a sticker. She is a very smart child and caught on real quick that she didn't want to pee in her panties. We only had the chart for the first week though. It has been almost a month and a half now and she has only had 2 accidents through-out the day.

I'm in the process of potty training my 28 month old little girl and I usually leave her on the potty for at least five to ten minutes....the best time to try is when you're actually going....I'm not stressing it too much though....her pediatrician says to take my time with it and never force...so....that's what I'm doing....best of luck!

I took my kids every 30 mins or so let them sit while I read 1 of their favorite short stories. No longer than 10 minutes.

We left our baby girl on for 3 minutes and my wife would tickle the back of her bottom just lightly and she would go tee tee. For doo doo we would rub her tummy in the morning before and after breakfast and it worked like a charm!
