People are making me snap at work.

They wonder why their pets are fat, unhappy and over weight. I ask if they walk there dog, and know the person themself is overweight.

Why do people do things to themself as they do to their pets?
The people who do this will help their own health and the dogs too and treats. I'm tired of these poor animals that keep being feed treats that are 500-700 calories treats and if the dog is 20lbs imagine what more then 1 a day does. Depending on the dog the calories differ, just like us. What can I honestly do here when people don't count treats as part of the diet.

Sounds like you're a vet. Other than advising them of what it's doing and/or giving them a comparative chart, I don't know what you can do. If you could chart for them what regular food calories are in the pet's usual diet, then how many more calories are added with snacks, they might be able to more visually understand. Unfortunately, if they don't care about themselves, they are probably not going to care if their pet is overweight as well. If you have provided them with all the information they need to make an informed decision about the pet's care, that's all you can do. I'm sure physicians get as frustrated with us people about the way we take care of ourselves and our children sometimes. Just treat the pet and the human with kindness and compassion. I'm sure it will sink in to a few.

I have a cousin (elderly) who has a Chihuahua that looks like a fat sausage because she feeds it treats all the time. Her husband gets on to her for it, she knows it's bad for the dog, but she can't seem to help herself. Sad.

Buck up - someone out there is listening and will learn - if not for the current pet, perhaps one in the future.

Agreed!! I hope these people don't have kids!

Look, I'll be honest, I'm not in the greatest shape. I like fast food and don't get enough exercise... but that really only harms ME. My dogs get all the exercise they want and only eat the best dog food I can find (they eat MUCH better than I do.)

It would be the same if I had kids.

When you decide you should be responsible for the life of another creature, you should actually BE RESPONSIBLE!

Some people do over feed their pets but you sound like you have a problem dealing with people who do not understand what over feeding does. You sound like you are a vet and should therefor be helpful instead of snapping at them. If you were my vet and snapped at me I would find another vet. Working with people you have to have patients. Do you just snap at them or do you try to find out if their is a health problem that is causing the pet to be obese? Have more patients and quit judging people who are PAYING you for help!

Are you a vet? If you are, why are you here asking us a bunch of questions you should already know? Advise your clients for heaven's sake. I totally rely on my vets advice.

so they have someone to be over weight with. Don't answer people if your going to get so worked up over it. You can't help someone who doesn't want to help themselves.
