My friend took out a restrainingg order on her brother who has mental illness, for coming over to her house in the middle of the night and had a weapon. Was it wrong to seek protection? She feels guilty all the time about it.

No, what she did was right, the only problem is does her brother understand what a restraining order is. If he does not understand it, then it certainly wont stop him from visiting again. It sounds to me like her brother needs to be insitutionalized if he is running around with weapons, otherwise he may end up being shot by someone.

If he's really got a mental illness, he's a danger to everyone. She should consult with other family members and look into getting him committed to an institiution.

i can understand her feeling of guilt but she did the right thing. if his illness is that bad maybe he should be placed for treatment. she needs to protect herself at all costs.
