We have to grant visas to foreigners because there are not enough high tech workers here to fill the demand.
The laws of supply and demand...don't whine about foreigners if you don't know what they know how to do...I'm just trying to make a point.

In my paper I see many job postings for high tech workers...that implies to me that there is still demand.
Otherwise, why are we trying to make it easier for more skilled workers to come.
( I am personally not against this, I'm tired of hearing some people talk crap about foreigners taking their jobs, etc.)

By the way...a lot of people (some of the whiners) are REPUBLICANS.
Did you know you are supporting CORPORATIONS in the process.
They want to hire cheap workers, doesn't matter where they come from...think of that next time you vote, and are unemployed!!!

I can see Gary's point...
but if that is the case, why are they advertising in local newspapers, if they want cheaper sources?

We are a country that puts little value on education... 40,000,000 teenagers drop out of school before graduation or graduate with less than Level 3 skills, the minimum required to hold any job.
We have a nation of idiots.....
That is why the high-tech companies have to look elsewhere for trained and well educated people.
Many of our young people don't give a darn...would rather watch TV, play video games, try to impress each other and complain than get an education.
It's sad, really, when you consider that the U.S. is one of only a handful of countries in the world that offer a free public education K-12. Most countries, one must pay.

We should fix our schools, in part by stopping the illegal immigration that is overcrowding them and diverting funds from our children's tech education. Then we should grow our own. Meantime, we need some H1B visas, but we need to study how many we need, rather than how many big business wants since business wants wages down, not just scarce workers. The more workers, the more they can drive down wages.
-
edit they advertise in a puny local paper nobody reads because the law says they can't have the foreign worker otherwise. They have to advertise and have to pay under current rules. But the 'prevailing wage' itself drops when too many workers are chasing the jobs.
This is why Cesar Chavez was violently against illegal immigration. Too many workers chasing the jobs drive down wages.

I think that we have a great many high tech workers looking for employment right here in this nation.
But others think differently it seems.
Microsoft billionaire Bill Gates is in Mexico, calling for America
to make it easier for highly skilled foreign workers to come to
the United States. Gates says the U.S. should relax its
immigration laws and allow skilled workers to come into this
country in greater numbers. It looks like Gates’
mission is to sell out more U.S. jobs to foreign workers.

My son is a highly paid computer consultant. It's not about a shortage of computer engineers, it's about cost. You can outsource a lot of projects to India, for example, and pay less that half to get the work done. In order to compete in a global economy, our workers are going to have to learn to work for a lot less pay and benefits. CEO's and upper management are constantly searching for ways to cut costs by finding ways to tap into cheap labor pools located in other countries.

This is more of a response to some of the other answerers: by law, all temporary workers on H-1B visas (i.e., the "normal" foreign worker) must legally be paid at the prevailing wage level for that location, position, and level of experience. If a company does not pay that, they are violating U.S. immigration law.
There is a desperate need for high-tech workers. Don't forget, about 1/2 of all graduates from U.S. universities in technical fields at the Master's & Ph.D. levels are foreign students. If we want to keep those people here, giving back the skills provided to them by our universities, we have to provide working visas. Remember, a legal foreign worker employed here on a visa pays taxes, provide revenue to his/her company, generates products that all U.S. workers use--and generates U.S. jobs and raises U.S. wages. If a company needs 20 people to do a job, and they can only find 10 U.S. native workers, and there are no visas available for legal foreign workers, they will have to take ALL 20 JOBS to another country.

You are missing the point. It's not that they are more educated in technology, it's that the foreigners are cheaper labor. Americans are getting paid 45.00 an hour for doing those jobs. We aren't whinning about anything. Perhaps this is an issue best left for Washington, DC. Thank you and may GOD come soon to make right all the wrongs that have been done on this earth.

The government SHOULD be providing a free education to all legal citizens, like in England. They don't & the the costs keep rising exponentially forcing most of us to either work full-time & go to school full time or give up on our dreams for a college education.

The reason why they advertise in local papers is because there are illegals that will take the jobs for a lot less.
