I think the real question is - Why is marriage in any way the business of the government?

Why not privatize marriage? Let people marry who they chose, of whatever gender they choose, and let the government butt out. Socialized marriage is a flop.

Look at corporation law. It seems to work pretty well. Fraud is prosecuted. Contracts are enforced. And nobody tells you what gender your CEO should be, or what color paint you should use to decorate the office.

It beats me why we stand by docile and subservient with clasped hands and let Big Brother government stick its nose into our bedrooms and interfere with our private personal decisions in our own homes. Have Americans become pussycats?

Gay marriage is about two, yes only 2, consenting adults entering into a legal contract called marriage.
