I got a tattoo on saturday and it is scabbing up. I have two other tattoos that did not scab. Why is it that this one is?

Many reasons come into play here from the location of the tattoo, if there was a lot of work done to it, like layers of shading, etc. Over-working.

What about aftercare immediately after? If you did not get to wash it within a few hours sometimes the normal "scabbing" mechanism of the body's healing functions set in.

I own a tattoo and body piercing shop and I've seen more tattoos healing in the past 20 years than I need to. Not all tattoos scab over. I have 8 tattoos and only one of them got a couple of very small scabs on it. The trick is to get it to heal without scabbing. You will retain all your ink if it doesn't scab. A lot has to do with how you heal it out. I've found that an ointment called "Tattoo Goo" is some of the best stuff for healing out a tattoo. It's all natural and it has vitamin E which is a big plus. Most people are told to use things like A&D ointment (diper rash ointment) or Neosporin. These contain patrolium and that's the one thing on this Earth that is non poris and won't let your tattoo breath and air is your #1 healer. Forgive me, I tend to rattle on when I talk about these things.

some colors and designs are dealt with a little different that others....make sure your taking care of it properly. Some tats scab some dont period. Mine never have ..yet...it doesnt always mean that something is wrong.

as far as he dressing..it can actually come off right away, the artist tells you to keep it covered for 2 hours but he just doesnt want you or your friends touching and messing with it.

take heed to this:

Fresh Tattoo

Take bandage off in 2 hours
Wash tattoo carefully with warm soapy water
DO NOT SCRUB
Lightly pat the tattoo until dry…
DO NOT RUB
Apply a very thin coat of bacitracin or aquaphor ointment 3 times a day for 3 to 5 days
Although re-bandaging a tattoo is not recommended, if covering the tattoo is necessary a sterile bandage or dressing should be used.
Be sure and wash the tattoo every night and morning…
DO NOT SOAK
Avoid tattoo exposure to direct sunlight and refrain from swimming in fresh, salt or chlorinated water for at least 2 weeks.
After External Healing

Tattoos heal quickly BUT fading can still be a problem
Apply hand lotion once a day until dryness stops
Vaseline Intensive Care, Lubriderm, Nivea, etc...
Tanning fades tattoos
Always cover fully healed tattoo with sun block
DO NOT RUIN YOUR INVESTMENT!!!

That's normal...infact it's weird that your other tattoos didn't scab up. Whatever you do, dont touch those scabs. I know, hard, but picking them off could mess up your tattoo. Just let nature take its course, and in a while the scabbing will be gone and your tattoo will be nice and smooth again.

if this is a bigger tattoo - its okay - all tattoos should scab cause that means it is healing right - just rub a & d cream on it (not the baby rash kind) and it will help with the healing process

Um... Thats normal. I have ten and they have ALL scabbed. Do not pick at it or the color will come out - I learned the hard way.

You artist was more heavy handed this time.

Or, when the artist was done they used saran wrap instead of a dressing.

Or, he used a dressing, and you took it off to early.......
