and racing greyhounds when they retire. I know some are put up for adoption at pet stores but what about the rest? Is there some type of facility or wooded haven for them to go to?

The working dogs are usually kept by one of the handlers. Almost all ex-racing GHs are adopted out.

Cairn said - "greyhounds to sleep because there bodys are weak from all of the raceing."

There bodies aren't weak from racing, they are fit and strong from running. Are humans who work out weak from excercise? No, they are fit and healthy. You are absolutely right about the AR lies though.

I think said - " I would rather put a dog to sleep than have it hurt someone."

I cannot think of a breed less likely to hurt someone than a GH. Running has nothing to do with aggression.

Well, the older drug dogs probably become pets, if they have all their senses, though they may just stay drug dogs for life. But racing hounds, like when they are hurt, the owner wants them put down because they cannot race therefore, they cannot get the owner any money, but some places, like a Greyhound Shelter will not only, prevent this from happening, but also care for the dog until it is healthy, then put it up for adoption (if its friendly), but if the dog is completely unfriendly, and cannot be trained to go to a home, they do put them down. They are no longer racers, and they cant be pets so there really isn't a big problem there. I would rather put a dog to sleep than have it hurt someone. But thats my answer

Sometimes they are retired by their current owner/handler in the case of drug dogs and service dogs, then kept by them as a pet and they get another drug or service dog for work. Others are adopted out. Greyhounds are adopted more and more, hopefully hardly any are put down now.

They usely will retire... They are like humans once they are done they stay at home all day and play. And usely they will stay with the person they worked with like there handler. But once animal activists will tell you that they put them to sleep. But that is not true. Well at least not completely true they will some times kbut greyhounds to sleep because there bodys are weak from all of the raceing. But as for servise dogs they will live lonog fulfilling lives with there family.

Thank you, this is an excellent question! There are people who have shelters and rescue organizations for animals like this and you can find out about them by looking on the internet under key words like the breed name or the job they did. If you are not interested in adoption, ALL DOG RESCUE GROUPS nees monetary support, and / or donations like food, toys, beds etc.

Most remain with the service family as pets when younger dogs come in to take over the working responsibilities.
