I have a 2yr old Black lab.. so I understand what your going through. Young Labs can be pretty rowdy. This is normal, but as he gets older it will become a problem. Training basic commands, and exercise are a most with labs. They are hunting dogs which means they need something to do at all times. Daily obendience training and be sure he also gets and hour or two of vigorous exercise. His manners will improve and his energy will be managable. With the crying an/or barking it can be managed, if he his left outside for long periods of time, try chew toys, regular dog toys or toys with food in them to keep him and his mouth busy. If this doesn't work, find a local trainer and get them to show or explain to you what else you need to do.

p.s. Displine should be so though you are the pack leader, many trainers will tell you not to spank or hit your dog. It cause aggressive behavior in your lab and he will not listen to you or he might try to bite you.

Chances are he won't grow out of it until he is about 7 years old. That is the average age that labs settle. These are HIGH energy hunting dogs that need to run, play and work all day long. They REALLY hate to be separate from the pack more so than other breeds. Your dog likely need MUCH more activity and play, a job would be good. He needs to be tired out before he is separate from you.

My boyfriend took our husky mix (17 months) roller blading for the first time last night, that was one happy happy dog when he came back. Rollerblading, pulling or biking with your dog is a great way to get the energy out and make your dog relaxed.

Think of a 7 year old in the house all day - it would drive you crazy! Your dog is the same. Not saying that your dog is in the house all day, but as a rule of thumb, add about 2 - 3 hours of vigorous activity above what you think your dog needs and that should be enough to sait him.

Letting him loose in the back yard alone does not count as exercise time unless he is running around by himself.

Also, make sure he's not being dominant nor protective.

And after reading the other answers, some are quite cruel and rather stupid. Ignoring your dog will not make him stop, I assume you've already discovered that. Locking him away in a room will make it MUCH MUCH MUCH MUCH MUCH worse. He's not trying to train you, he's trying to communicate to you! He's trying to tell you that some need is not meet. Your dog's whining and being all over you is one of the few ways he has to communicate to you that you recognize... would you ignore a baby doing the same thing, or would you fix the problem???

Good luck! :)

PLEASE, get some help from a trainer! He will not outgrow bad behavior, especially the way you are handling it now. He will be a puppy for at least another year. You have chosen to get a breed of dog that is VERY active and needs a lot of attention and training AND socialization with other dogs. It seems as if you have a mostly sedentary lifestyle and don't pay much attention to him, hence the crying. If you can't afford a trainer, there are tons of great books. Go to www.wholedogjournal.com for help and references. It is a great publication. If you don't have the time or desire to devote to this breed you might think of getting a breed that does not require a lot of time, or maybe an older dog from a shelter or SPCA, that is already trained. Your dog REALLY needs some love and attention. Please don't end up being one of those people who ends up with a mean dog for all the wrong reasons.

Take him for several long walks each day (at least 1 mile) It will tire him out, make him happy and less likely to ask for your constant attention. I have a german shepard/ siberan husky mix that has an endless supply of energy and whines when she has no outlet for it. If you are unable to walk that much a tie out is an option just make sure he has toys to play with or he will whine out there as well. My dog goes thru toys at an unbelievable rate so I go to the dollar stores to provide variety at a price that's affordable. Good Luck

"i know alot he will grow out of..." it's cute your'e so naive!

Your dog needs:

1. Obedience training
2. More Exercise
3. Stimulating toys (Kongs, etc.)
4. to be Neutered

Labs are very active/hyper dogs.... it maybe something you just have to learn to live with, but the above will help A LOT.

and whatever you do, do not listen to Danielle DP up there, that comment is idiotic. Doing that will only make your dog neurotic and a lot worse.

Stop giving in to him. He is carrying on with the conduct on account that he is aware of you provide in. Let him cry and pay concentration the pitch of his cries. Like a human youngster puppies have distinct cries for distinct demands and can cry always in the event that they realize that implies you are going to come going for walks. By carrying on with your conduct you are going to become with a puppy that has nervousness problems later in lifestyles that might result in worry biting and destruction. Reassure him now that sure you're there however he does not want you to be touching him always.

I once had a golden retriever like that. I ended up buying him his own pet. I got another, smaller dog for him. He seemed to understand that Jazzy was for him, he played the Alpha Male thing, but he was also very affectionate toward Jazz. We didn't really have a problem with him being up in our face all the time after that. Dogs understand more than we give them credit for sometimes.

First you need to make sure he is getting enough exercise. Walk your dog (or better yet run or bike) in the morning and also at night. Right now your dog does not respect you, you need to be the leader. Check out the website below.

Well make sure he has food, water in the bowl. You should give him a set time for attention. I really hope it goes well.

Sounds like he's training you well. Pretty soon he'll be able to get you to do anything he wants just by whining at the right time. Way to go fido!
