I think it depends on the kind of dining room you've got. If its big then you'll need some composed art with the images or sensations you want to express, for a little dinning room you could choose a long wide picture.
If you want a social reunion at the dining room while eating then you can ask for some abstract or concept art with bright colors on it, if you want to express "great food at this house" a picture with glasses of wine and cheese would be a good choice... it depends on your taste mostly.

I find that in a dining room a mirror works beautifully. It reflects the sparkle of the china and candlelight and makes for a very romantic or relaxing dining experience. If you happen to have a chandelier in the room, all the better.....more sparkle. Make sure the mirror is large enough. I love a large standing mirror at the end of the table but a wall hung mirror is also nice. Also make sure you don't hang it too high. Mirrors come in all sizes, frame colours and price ranges so I'm sure you'll find one that suits your needs. If you'd rather have art then any art will do. Art is very adaptable to any room as long as the colours are suitable to your decor.

The kind I have, I guess. I have a watercolor done by a local artist that would be considered comtemporary art. I have a lithograph signed by the artist that is a garden scene. I have several antique trays and serving dishes mounted to the wall as display. I have a few Venetian masks on display and a wrought iron candle sconce. However, I've done dining rooms that featured large mirrors, Japanese silk kimonos, sculptures, quilts, hatboxes, collections, even fans.

Nothing too recognizable. I would go with a painting by a local artist or a peaceful abstract painting. Try studiogene.com. I found him at a local coffee shop.

In mine i have framed wine posters. The style is deffinitely contemporary, warm. They're a couple having a drink in a bistro, a surreal one: giant wine bottle with girl dancing around it, and then a writers hand and paper with a glass and bottle in the back ground. Found them all on ebay.
