You can pay a fee to get rush service. You can get the forms at any Canada Post office.
Depending on where you live it may be faster to drive to a passport office in a major city. I know my friend who lives in Hamilton, drove to Toronto to submit all his paperwork because by doing so he could get his passport sooner than if he dropped it off at the passport office in Hamilton.
Edit:
"Urgent or express services are available for emergency or compassionate reasons on a case-by-case basis. These services are available only for those applicants who can apply for a passport in person at a Passport Canada service location. A valid reason for travel along with a proof of travel may be required."

First thing...get your picture done and your guarantor to sign it and all the "normal" paper work done. (as you would for a normal passport)
Next step, go to your local Member of Parliament. In person is better, but you can call. An MPs office can put an "extra" rush on things. Exceptions like your's are really the only reason an MPs office should be used.
You will pay an extra $70 or on top of regular passport fees. But, it sounds like that will be money well spent.
Or...you could drive to and from the USA and avoid the whole passport situation. If you board a plane in the USA, you will not need a passort to fly.
My prayers are with your friend ((hug))

If you are driving, you don't need a passport.
If you are flying, then you do. Take the application (you can download it from Passport Canada website) with you and all your documentation and go to a passport services office near you. You can get locations from the website as well.
You can get an urgent expedited passport for an extra fee: $70 more for 24 hours, and $30 more for 2-9 business days. In your situation it may well be worth it to pay the extra $30. You MUST apply in person at a Passport Canada service location to do this.
All the information you need is here:

Why not drive or take a bus. You just need a driver's license and birth certificate if going by land this year. Next year you need a passport.
If you go line up they normally take 2 weeks, but they don't guarantee that, there has been a delay of up to 9 weeks. But the general word is they aren't taking as long anymore.
You can pay $70 extra to apply for the Urgent service and get it the next day. BUT this is a case by case situation, so I am not sure they would consider it urgent as you are just going to the US and could drive. For urgent - illness, you need a letter from the doctor. You can do the same thing as express for $30 in about a week. But you still need that doctor's letter.

RE:
How can I get a rush on a Canadian passport?
a good friend of mine is terminally ill and I really want to get down to Boston to see her really soon (within the next month, she's not doing well).
I am a Canadian citizen, lived in Ontario all my life. I will be travelling by myself. I have my social insurance card, birth certificate,...

My daughter just got her Canadian Passport in two weeks. She got a job with a large internet company. (Hmmm, not mentioning which one, though it does ANSWER a lot of our questions). And got a letter saying she had to travel for work.
My neice had her airline ticket and got hers fast too.
I believe you can get your passport fast if you have your ticket and a good reason. I believe that you may be able to get it on compasionate grounds.
Also, if you drive you will not need a passport just yet. Just two pieces of ID, one with a photo.
To find out, go to your nearest passport office.

Sorry about your friend but there is a way to get your passport fast, just punch in passports now and search the web. You will be paying alot though, some places charge $300 on top of the other fees for obtaining the passport.

United States Postal Service:
"You may request the Department of State's Expedited Passport Processing Service for an additional $60. With this service, the agency will normally process your passport within three business days after receiving your application."
not sure if you have that option in Canada, i would go ask
