A copay is something you pay to the doctor when you go for a visit. It's like supplemental payment. They are charging X amount for the service. The insurance tells you each time you see a doc, you must pay Y amount; the insurance is paying the rest (Z amount). So Y+Z=X

a co-payment is much like a deductible, it is supposed to be the difference between what your doctor charges and what your insurance is willing to pay.
