It may be that the doctor calculated that you shouldn't run out of your old prescription till next week. It depends on what the prescription is for. If it is a narcotic, you won't be able to fill it early (without the approval of the prescriber), if it is an antibiotic or non-controlled substance, the pharmacist might be willing to fill it early without the approval of the prescriber (he may ask for a valid reason- like you're going out of town). If it's a controlled substance, don't even bother giving a valid reason. Pharmacists have heard every possible excuse.

The pharmacist can call the doctor, if he is unwilling to take your word about an error in date.

I have to answer a question with a question.

Why did your doctor put next week's date on the prescription?
