Hey, even the devil believes in God. He is still going to fry on judgement day.
Jesus said, "Nobody comes to the Father except thru Me."
If you believe in God but not in Jesus and His work on the cross then you are in the same boat as the devil.
You may want to form an image of God in your mind, to your own liking, and this may not be what you want to hear but it is the truth. God wasn't formed in our minds; we were formed in His.
How can you discuss who God is and ignore the truth? The only Truth we can rely on is His Word, The Bible.

I am a Christian; of course, I've known since childhood that there are many other religious options. There are thousands of other gods, beliefs and philosophies to choose from. We are not alone in the marketplace of beliefs.
However, when one capitalizes "God", it is generally presumed that one is speaking of the Christian or Jewish God, because those groups capitalize the word. If one refers to worshiping "gods" with a small-case G, then they may be assumed to speaking about one of the many polytheistic religions. So in short, the problem may lie in the wording. If a person comes charging into this forum with a question like, "Do you believe in God?", people will generally assume they're referring to the Judeo-Christian God, rather than to Thor, Zeus, or the scores of other deities out there, all whom have worshipers.

You have to base your beliefs on something. Some choose their own opinions. Others choose the Word of God. Since the Bible says there is only one TRUE God, then when someone mentions God (capital "G"), people who understand the Bible think of the one TRUE God--the God of the Jews and the Christians. All other gods are gods (small "g").
Blessings.

And Christians seem to be the main perpetrators of this ridiculous myth.
I once saw the question "Are you a Christian or an Atheist?"
I guess that asker hadn't heard about the 2/3 of humanity that is "other."

This only happens in a Western culture. If you were to conduct a survey in an Eastern culture, you would find references to a supreme being having a response similar to "praise be Allah" or a logically constructed answer revolving around the issue.

Ummmm lets think about your obvious ploy to try to insight people.
God as in Judea/Christian god. Is followed by three different religions. Muslim, Christian, and Jewish. Muslims call him Allah, Christians call him God, and Jewish call him Ywyh (how every that is spelled)
So if you live in America and make a reference to God. Which religion would you pick?
Because if you are of any other religion your god is not a generic name of God but has his or her own proper name. Such as Zeus, Vishnu, Cerronous, Odin, just to name a small few.

I'd blame the christians.
Most pro-god questions which do not further identify the deity seem to be of christian origin. Muslims will tend to use the name Allah. I have seen some references to YHWH and g-d that I would assume are jewish. It's rare for any other type of theist to show up here. We're just playing to our audience.

Um, Christians are not the only ones that believe in God. And, who are the "they" you are referring to?

Absolutely, Many religions are based on the premise of a single God. Story lines may very, but in the end , shouldn't they all be one happy family, after all , God is God and they all believe in him , they should stop sweating the details.

Lots of people believe in God but it is belief and trust in Jesus Christ that is the way to salvation.
Jhn 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
Jhn 14:7 ¶ If ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also: and from henceforth ye know him, and have seen him.
Jhn 14:8 Philip saith unto him, Lord, shew us the Father, and it sufficeth us.
Jhn 14:9 Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou [then], Shew us the Father?
Jhn 14:10 Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works.
Jhn 14:11 Believe me that I [am] in the Father, and the Father in me: or else believe me for the very works' sake.
Jhn 14:12 ¶ Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater [works] than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.
