something slow, manual, safe, and ugly.

Seriously. you have your whole life ahead of you to own cool, fast cars. Everyone should have to have a beater for their first car. Everyone i know that had a rough first car had great stories from it, and loved the car, regardless of how crappy it was. Everyone i know that got a brand new BMW or mercedes never appreciated it.

chances are youll wreck the car. Why not get something that wont break your heart or bank if its dinged or wrecked?

My personal choice would be something like an old volvo 240. Theyre super reliable, indestructable, safe, slow, and so ugly theyre lovable.

but fitting those criteria, my sons first car was a 97 GTi VR6. Its 2 door, v6, and 5 speed. Technically i still have it and its for sale. Its too quick for a first time driver though probably. He put a turbo kit on it so its close to 300 horsepower.

and also: I suggest doing a high speed drivers education course. Youll learn things there that will make you a far better and safer driver. I think they should be mandatory for all drivers, personally. It could have saved my son 3 of his best friends.

i'm pretty sure there are alot of good first time cars. I think what you whant to look for is something that is in fair condition with around 100,000 miles on it. You wouldn't whant some thing brand new because you whant to learn the "dues" and "don't dues" on a car that is not that expensive. For example, don't due: go for 7 months with out getting an oil change, you know stuff like that. My first car was a 1991 honda accord. It was a great car untill i started doing the maintnance on it my self. I used to put 6 qt. of oil when it only took 4. see what i mean.

why not a 4 cyl for the first car. either way, something cheap. if u r a male, pickup truck is cool. if a girl, same thing, whatever , the others have good ideas, but thry are naming some fairly expensive cars, dont buy a hot car yet. live a little longer.

One that you can pay cash for and are willing to part with if you get into a collision, or, heaven forbid, it gets stolen. Do not buy a new car for your first car. Also, check with your insurance company for which car gets the best rate of "liability only" insurance.

you probably don't want to hear this, but the best first car is one that you can pay for without loans. It doesn't matter if it's a 1956 chevy pick-up that's half rusted out, it will be your first and you will love it
